Hate to sound like the "language Nazi" but it drives me CRAZY when I'm reading a post and these words are misused. It completely stops the comprehension of the content, and it's like stumbling over a rock. I blame it on spellcheck.

I await the day that some evil person creates a virus that replaces the dictionary of everyone's spell checker with a dictionary that has every word spelled slightly wrong.

This is a silly post. As someone once said,
"There is no there .. there." ,
But I ask "Could it be they're there",
Others think that "you are holding out for They're their"
But they wont tell you what their their is all about.

I hate the their/there/they're, it's/its, your/you're, lose/loose thing myself. It probably comes from being the son of a published novelist.

I love spell check high-lighting but wish that the autocheck could be killed. To know that a word has been mis-spelled by a typo or ignorance is a blessing but the user should be forced to use a dictionary for the educational value of the experience.
Of course, this does nothing for this problem. I first encountered it years ago when I got a solicitation letter offering to come to my work 'cite'. As an old f**t, I'm sure that it is not unusual to view the trends with alarm, but since I've felt this way for 30+ years, I wonder if I'm calling for the tide to receed. While it has not been the "King's English" for centuries, must we be so careless with what we have got?!

Spelling
The European Union commissioners have announced that agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for short).
In the first year, 's' will be used instead of the soft 'c'. Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the hard 'c' will be replaced with 'k.' Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome 'ph' will be replaced by 'f'. This will make words like 'fotograf' 20 per sent shorter. In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent 'e's in the languag is disgrasful, and they would go. By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing 'th' by 'z' and 'W' by 'V'. During ze fifz year, ze unesesary 'o' kan be dropd from vords kontaining 'ou', and similar changes vud of kors; be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil b no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer.
Ze drem vil finali kum tru.

it drives me CRAZY when I'm reading a post and these words are misusedI admit to wincing a little bit when I see such illiteracy or carelessness but, maybe you need some time off. ;-)
"Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference."
Oh, and the latest peeve I have is with people using "can not" instead of "cannot." (Idiots! ;-D)

It drives me nuts, too. And I make the mistake regularly enough to point the finger at myself.
I know the right answers. I'm just typing and words flowing and the next thing you know their on the page wrong.

ps: and spellchecks don't catch them.

Careful or the "Word Martial" will declare "Marshall Law!"
"Than" we will be in trouble more "then" not.

Looking at the calender, we see that we have entered a new millenium. Hopefully, the English language can survive a little longer. But we are totally in danger of loosing the language. Bad spelling is literally exploding before our eyes. I'm like, can it get any worse? Were in desparate need of a return to proper spelling, which is intrical to preserving our language.
Then theirs the matter of the proper use of apostrophe's, which is a carry-over concern from the 90's. But thats' a whole seperate topic.

I've always like these rules.
A Few, Pungent, Pointed Tips for Writers
1. Don't use no double negative.
2. Make each pronoun agree with their antecedent.
3. Join clauses good, like a conjunction should.
4. About them sentence fragments.
5. When dangling, watch your participles.
6. Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
7. Just between you and I, case is important too.
8. Don't write run-on sentences they are hard to read.
9. Don't use commas, when they aren't necessary.
10. Try to not ever split infinitives.
11. Its important use apostrophe's correctly.
12. Correct spelling is esential.

I had an interesting spell check experience back in the ol' college daze. While typing a paper I ran "does not" together to spell doesnot. Spell check suggested the proper spelling was "doe snot." Good thing I caught it before turning it in! :)
