Matt Lauer just completed an interview with Nancy Pelosi. After some standard stuff about her "historic" role as the first woman to lead a congressional party, Lauer asked a a pretty probing question:
"When Republicans chose Newt as their leader, Democrats were quick to say they had gone too far right. Why shouldn't the Republicans now say that in choosing you, the Democrats have gone too far left?"
Pelosi answered by stating that while she represented her district in SF (implying that she was being very liberal in representing a very liberal district), she will lead "right down the center" of the Dem caucus.
She then added the following statement: "When people call me a liberal, I call myself a conservative Catholic."
I had heard Pelosi make the same statement in an interview yesterday, so this clearly seems to be a standard part of her defense to the charge that she's too liberal to lead successfully.
I'm not Catholic, but I have to assume that many true "conservative Catholics" will be upset by hearing Pelosi claim that label. It is hard to imagine an authentic conservative Catholic supporting unrestricted abortion, including partial birth abortion, as does Pelosi.
Pelosi failed to vote to ban PBA even when an exception was included for the life of the mother. I think it is thus fair to categorize her as a pro-abortion extremist. Given that record, to go on national TV and call herself a conservative Catholic seems the height of gall and duplicity.
As a sidenote, Pelosi also trotted out what the Dems have apparently decided to make their new theme: "Safety and Soundness," apparently some combination of national security and economic progress. Instant nominee for the "Lamest Political Slogan of the Decade."
I'm going to have to question that statement. Pope Gregory VI (1045-6) said, "He is not a murderer who brings about abortion before the soul is in the body." Gregory XIII (1572-85) said it was not homicide to kill an embryo of less than 40 days since it wasn't yet human. His successor, Sixtus V (who rewrote the Bible), disagreed. His Bull of 1588 made all abortions for any reason homicide and cause for excommunication. His successor, Gregory XIV, reversed that decree. In 1621 the Vatican issued another pastoral directive permitting abortion up to 40 days. As late as the 18th century, one of the Catholic church's theologians, St. Alphonsus de Liguori, still denied that the soul was infused at conception and allowed for flexibility, expecially when the mother's life was in danger. Finally, in 1869, Pius IX declared that any destruction of any embryo was an abortion and merited excommunication.
Thankfully (since this is the opion I agree with), this is the view of the Catholic church that remains to this day. I just wish they would be honest about the different "official" positions that have been put forth and not try to tell everyone that they have had the same stand "since the first century."
In her first major interview as House Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi has told a bald-faced LIE and has besmirched the reputations of REAL conservative, practising Catholics. This woman is a hypocrite and a liar of the highest order.
Nancy Pelosi advocates abortion on demand, partial birth abortion, abortion for minors without parental consent, gay marriage, and gay adoptions. For her to claim herself to be a "conservative Catholic" is truly despicable. She ought to be ex-communicated from the church for the public policy evil she has helped perpetrate on this country.
Did the Archbishop of the Boston area ever call the Kennedy's to account? They hold similar views on abortion to Pelosi.
Pelosi will get away with her statements as far as the church hierarchy is concerned, but she won't get away with them with the public.
Now I'm starting to see the wisdom behind Trent Lott's statement that one of the first issues he'll bring up in the next Congress is PBA. That will blow Pelosi and all the other so-called "centrists" right out of the water. They'll be on the defensive from the get go--a great way to start the next two years.
And porn pusher Larry Flynt was a born again Christian. Liberals are liars.
People, people! Give her some credit. This statement has an almost Clintonian deviousness. She doesn't claim to be a conservative Catholic. What she did was say she called herself a conservative Catholic.
She could have easily said, "When people call me a liberal, I tell them I'm a martian agronomist." or "When people call me a liberal, I tell them I'm really a 14th century time-travelling llama disguised as a human."
In addition, she can claim it was a sarcastic reflexive opposition to being 'labelled'. In that case, the whole 'it's a dirty lie' thing doesn't even come close to sticking.
Watch this woman carefully, she's more clever than you think.
I sure hope you're right. I think the archbishhop of San Frncisco is new. I have been told that he is being punished/sued for his stand on homosexuality.
I'm not surprised that Pelosi is trying to convince people she is a Catholic, however the conservative part is a real joke. After all it worked for Granholm in Michigan. I wonder what her homosexual supporters will have to say.
This is as good an example of what I've talked about all along as can be found. How can you trust anyone who can't even tell the truth to THEMSELVES?
That and the fact that the Fox morning show is generally embarrassingly infantile.
JFK was around before Roe v. Wade, so his views are probably irrelevant as far as abortion is concerned. But let's look at Ted, a "practicing Catholic". He is virulently pro-abortion and that does affect the way he governs. While on Judiciary, he made it a top priority to submarine any judicial appointment that wouldn't support abortion on demand (Bork, e.g.).
Ask DU why they think Teddy belongs to a group whose views he openly advocates against.
Naw, money buying favors and position in "the Chruch" ... Can't happen!
YET!
