Gore Calls 2000 Verdict 'Crushing,' Assails Court
Washington Post ^ | 11/16/2002 | Dan Balz

In his first interviews since conceding the presidency to George W. Bush almost two years ago, former vice president Al Gore calls the outcome of the 2000 election "a crushing disappointment" and criticizes the 5-4 Supreme Court decision that put Bush in the White House as "completely inconsistent" with the court's conservative philosophy.

"I believe that if everyone in Florida who tried to vote had had his or her vote counted properly, that I would have won," Gore said in an interview with Washington Post Magazine staff writer Liza Mundy for an article to be published Sunday. "I strongly disagreed with the Supreme Court decision and the way in which they interpreted and applied the law. But I respect the rule of law, so it is what it is."

Gore told ABC's Barbara Walters, in an interview to air tonight on ABC's "20/20," that he "absolutely" believed he would become president when the Florida Supreme Court ordered a recount of all disputed ballots in the state, making the result all the more emotionally difficult to accept. His wife, Tipper, said in the Post interview, "I still believe we won."

We're coming back! The very fact that at least WE understand how sick this man is -- and the lengths he's willing to go to to win -- is a plus, IMO.

Honestly, I believe at some future date, he will, in fact, self-destruct on national TV.

Generally, when trailing in a poll about a theoretical ballot, the proper course of action is to try to RAISE your standing, Al.

How quickly he forgot the nasty backlash from the first iteration of his delusional tirade. I have to concur with an earlier assessment, its time for the straitjacket.

Some consultant has told Gore it's better to return to the whining over the 2000 election, to change the subject from the Wellstone funerally, and Election 2002!

Ummm .. there is a reason the elephant is associated with the Republican Party

We have loooong memories and don't forget things

I suspect we agree on 90% of things outside of a specific part of the biological sciences. ;^)

Shame that one little thing keeps getting in the way ;)

I heard some mention of that earlier this evening (on Brit Hume's show maybe?) ...... whoever was talking about it said that the concept was too far left even for Old Crusty! That's scary!

He never asked for EVERY vote in Florida to be counted mined. He only asked to mine votes in a few countys.

It's only been a couple of years and already he's revising history.

Yes, I did! But when I went to the WP site, to read the rest of the article, I particularly enjoyed:

"He said he and his family prayed together not to turn bitter over what had happened."

They prayed NOT TO TURN BITTER? Maybe someone should be giving Al some better sound bites. I also enjoyed how he "needed some time off"!

Well, I didn't know what General Harding paid for the property but yes, I did know the history of Belle Meade. The plantation was about 5 or 6,000 acres. It became quite renown after the war. Of course, the Gore house is not that old it just stands on part of the property.

If Gore truly wanted to be in touch with "his base" they would have bought a house in north Nashville. I'm sure Al won't find any of his fellow teachers at MTSU, Tennessee State or Fisk in his new neighborhood.
