"Concerned" White House moves to "ramp up" terror defenses

White House-AP -- Worried by a spike in terrorist-related intercepts, the White House is moving to "ramp up" homeland defenses.Deputy Press Secretary Scott McClellan says federal agencies are taking a number of unspecified steps. They're also contacting state and local law enforcement and private groups.

However, there's no plan right now to boost the nationwide terror alert status, which is at yellow -- mid-way up the government's five-color range.

McClellan says the White House is "concerned" about recent intelligence -- and about this week's audio tape in which a voice purportedly that of Osama bin Laden threatens new attacks.

The spokesman says regardless of who's on the tape, the administration "takes it seriously" when someone promises new terrorist strikes.

It does make you wonder why they released the tape NOW. IT might be a code. Holidays are coming. Heard something about 4 hospitals are in the target..Washington, Los Angelos..forgot the other 2.

Are we still investigating illegals and muslims in schools that are here in the US? IF NOT... WHY NOT????

I would hope Drudge is responsible enough to be confident in his sources before posting something of this nature. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt for now. He's sometimes wrong, but he's usually right.

Well past tapes that Bin Laden has released have been followed up with terrorist strikes, usually within a month's time.

That's not my recollection. Nothing happened after his monthly videos we saw last year.

Not every tape, but before the 1998 US Embassy bombings, USS Cole bombing, 9/11 attacks Bin Laden released a tape talking about attacking US interests. In fact, before the USS Cole bombing he was wearing a Yemeni dagger symbol.

Not saying this audiotape is a precursor, but this is how Al Qaeda has operated in the past.
