His mother in North Carolina, now 82, pleads that he was kidnapped from S. Korea in 1965 against his will and brainwashed up there in the Peoples' Paradise, just as his Japanese wife and scores of other Japanese were.

I haven't read the dossier, but would like to see if there was any problem history or tendency for communism, Lee Harvey Oswald type stuff, etc. in the files on Pvt. Jenkins!

As for me, the statute of limitations for desertion from the military in the United States is for 40 years, so I would not even be able to visit Japan until 2005.

Will somebody please tell me why the statute of limitations on this type of desertion is not forever? This man is a traitor to his uniform, brainwashed or not.

I'd give this "defector" the benefit of the doubt until it's proved he wasn't kidnapped.
