It's not enough for John Thune to just talk about "unethical" voting practices.

Republican John Thune threw in the towel on his South Dakota Senate race yesterday, notwithstanding the suspicious circumstances under which he lost by a mere 524 votes. We think that at a minimum he owed his many supporters a recount.

I reserve judgement on the Senate investigating, since they do not have the power to PROSECUTE. Myself, I prefer arrests, convictions, and imprisonment and/or heavy fines. That is the only way you are going to stop this.

Think 2004. The reason for Thune's graciousness may be found in Ashcroft's stepping aside in 2000. This year, in reaction to what happened in Missouri cities in 2000 and thanks to the squeeky wheel that Sen. Bond became, 400 FBI agents monitored urban polls. The MO Sec of State expected thousands of illegal votes so they created a category called "provisional" by which someone who was not at his polling spot, unsure if he was regsitered, etc., could vote and then his registration would be researched later to see if his count could count. With 400 poll watchers, there were only 600 provisional votes statewide.

Expect Thune to run again, perhaps even against Daschle. Expect FBI agents to watch the polls. Expect the Republican organization to be on top of all absentee applications and counting. This isn't over yet.

Just as the Senate campaign started in 2000. I believe the next campaing has started. This is a strategy right or wrong it is a plan. Doing a political version of the charge of the light brigade will serve no future. Besides we have the Alabama situation to deal with and we have another senate race to focus our attention.

Your ananlysis makes perfect sense. It might be distasteful to not fight for what's right, but the Senate is in Republican hands, and certainly Thune will be given a position.

It could get really nasty in the press if it looks like Republicans are questioning the native American vote. Why risk it? (I'm not sure whether I agree with not contesting this, but picking battles that can be won is standard fare)

I remember Dornan's race. I remember a judge, upon finding that illegal aliens voting stating that it cannot be proven that they voted for Sanchez. Which is true. Consider the following scenario: Thune actually wins and Johnson points out vote fraud that his own camp committed but can't be tied to his campaign. Then what? Does the election get overturned in favor of Johnson?

The fact is that a recount will simply recount the fraudulent votes. We need to find fraud. If it can be proven that Johnson knew about it, he can be unseated. Otherwise, I'd be perfectly happy to see some SD Democrats in jail for this.

I think Thune was hand picked by Dubya to run for the Senate against Johnson...perhaps Dubya also advised him to let it go. We may see Mr Thune in a high visibility appointed position in the administration or we may see him kick dassholes butt in 2004.

Mr. Thune has an obligation, not to himself, but, to the citizenry, to have this thing investigated.

Yes, indeed. But are we certain that no investigation is going on? I'm not sure it (or its intermediate results) would be publicized, given the proclivities of our media.

This strikes me as a good subject for a mail bombardment of the United States Senate:

1. Is an investigation going on?
2. If not, why not?
3. If so, what resources does it command, including its powers to compel testimony, and when may we expect at least a preliminary report?

Use Snail Mail, folks. Most elected officials ignore E-mail, or fob it off on a minor staffer.

Hopefully, The GOP won't listen to folks like you and emulate Al Gore. A recount would merely recount the same fraudulent ballots...and Thune would still lose.

The state of South Dakota has 30 agents assigned to this case. That's a little much for just Red Earth Whatshername.

Gee, so much for the rule of law then, huh? Thune rolls over, turns his back on the commission of some major felonies all to better feather his nest further down the road. Lovely. Just the kind of guy we need in office. How hard is it to prove dead people voted, for pete's sake? Or that some people double-dipped? This isn't rocket science. But one does need a spine and a determination to see that the rule of law is respected. Sounds to me like Thune lacks both.

Perhaps it wouldn't be as simple as it sounds. Keep in mind that the Donkeys have a great deal of experience with this.
