Way back in the 1950's when I first tasted politics and journalism, Republicans briefly controlled the White House and Congress. With the exception of Joseph McCarthy and his vicious ilk, they were a reasonable lot, presided over by that giant war hero, Dwight Eisenhower, who was conservative by temperament and moderate in the use of power.
That brand of Republican is gone. And for the first time in the memory of anyone alive, the entire federal government the Congress, the Executive, the Judiciary is united behind a right-wing agenda for which George W. Bush believes he now has a mandate.
That mandate includes the power of the state to force pregnant women to give up control over their own lives.
It includes using the taxing power to transfer wealth from working people to the rich.
It includes giving corporations a free hand to eviscerate the environment and control the regulatory agencies meant to hold them accountable.
And it includes secrecy on a scale you cannot imagine. Above all, it means judges with a political agenda appointed for life. If you liked the Supreme Court that put George W. Bush in the White House, you will swoon over what's coming.
And if you like God in government, get ready for the Rapture. These folks don't even mind you referring to the GOP as the party of God. Why else would the new House Majority Leader say that the Almighty is using him to promote 'a Biblical worldview' in American politics?
So it is a heady time in Washington a heady time for piety, profits, and military power, all joined at the hip by ideology and money.
Don't forget the money. It came pouring into this election, to both parties, from corporate America and others who expect the payback. Republicans outraised democrats by $184 million dollars. And came up with the big prize monopoly control of the American government, and the power of the state to turn their ideology into the law of the land. Quite a bargain at any price.
That's it for this week.
For NOW, I'm Bill Moyers.
Notice how this one always seems to top the list? Shows what's truly important to them.
Bill Moyers is right. In America we will continue to tax the working people and redistribute that wealth to the rich (such as taxpayer funded PBSs) Bill Moyers and I don't see the GOP having the spine to end this.
I think Bill Moyers' commentary is amazing... Not "good" amazing -- not even "crazy" amazing. "Amazingly Ridiculous!" That's the term I'm searching for.
Every one of your major points (the "horrors of GOP control!") is a gross exaggeration -- typical fear-mongering that you liberals have been trying to foist on the American public for decades. I don't recall conservatives making this kind of "Commentary" (on PBS or elsewhere) when Jimmy Carter and the Democrats controlled everything... in retrospect, let's all consider how scary that notion is!
Maybe this election reflects that the fear tactic is starting to wear thin. You better worry if people really start digging into policy issues and realizing the Ponzi-schemes you all have been promoting for 70 years and how the real world works. Mr. Moyers has been a pathetic apologist for the left as long as I can remember -- which goes back to the weak and feeble Carter Administration which I now "fondly" remember.
Welcome to the real world, Mr. Moyers. I would appreciate it if you would cease using Public Tax Money (via PBS) to promote the vile propaganda that you love to disseminate (taking from "me" and using for the "oppressed"). No, I'm not talking about PBS contributions -- I ceased supporting that organization about the time you got on board that gravy train.

I know Moyers owns his own production company, and I think the main, if not only customer for shows producted by his company is PBS. I don't know if they've done any programs for PBS without Moyers as the host.
Ooooooh...I wanna hear him back this up with something besides worn-out word games and socialist rhetoric.
...is united behind a right-wing agenda for which George W. Bush believes he now has a mandate.
Yes Bill, you lying commie b*st*rd, the ghost of Barry Goldwater, like Marleys, has come home to haunt your collective little heart.
I was one of Barry's Boys, so I know well your ilk. The mushroom cloud of fear you used against Goldwater came back to haunt your kind in the billowing dust of the WTC. I hope you realize Moyers, that some of us knew in '64, that you and LBJ were willing to sacrifice young Americans on the alter of the '68 election. Those of us that made it through, carry the burden of the retribution that you owe to the patriotic, the conscripted, the injured, the disabeled and the walking wounded.
The wronged souls of Barry's Legions await your arrival, Bill.
I'm calling my congressman, and am going to ask him to defund this trash. I'd call my sinators too, but they are worthless.
Wonder how he categorizes the White House rip-off the Clinton's did as they left---"Poor" taking from the "Rich"?
"Some broadcaster the public have funded that spits extremist left views against the extremist right views: this guy is the flipside of Rush L.Ultra-radical rants from either side of the idiotological divide should be subject to quality control if PBS-NPR ever wants my respect. Cull the demogogues. This guy's conspiracy rant belongs in the Green Weekly. Maybe he's a member of the Greens. If he feels so alienated by the central parties too bad, but at least he should declare that he is a extreme leftist.
It says a lot about PBR's producers and editors I suppose. Ahh, government employees..."
