CODE OF CONDUCT FOR MARINES
ARTICLE I: I am an American, fighting in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.

ARTICLE II: I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender the members of my command while they still have the means to resist.

ARTICLE III: If I am captured I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and to aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.

ARTICLE IV: If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information nor take part in any action which might be harmfull to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I will obey lawful orders of those appointed over me and will back them in every way.

ARTICLE V: When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am required to give name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my coutry or its allies or harmful to their cause.

ARTICLE VI: I will never forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

THE 11 GENERAL ORDERS MARINES
GENERAL ORDER 1: To take charge of this post and all government property in view.

GENERAL ORDER 2: To walk my post in a military manner, keeping always on the alert and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing.

GENERAL ORDER 3: To report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce.

GENERAL ORDER 4: To repeat all calls from posts more distant from the guardhouse than my own.

GENERAL ORDER 5: To quit my post only when properly relieved.

GENERAL ORDER 6: To receive, obey, and pass on to the sentry who relieves me all orders from the Commanding Officer, Officer of the Day, and Officers and Noncommissioned Officers of the Guard only.

GENERAL ORDER 7: To talk to no one except in the line of duty.

GENERAL ORDER 8: To give the alarm in case of fire or disorder.

GENERAL ORDER 9: To call the Corporal of the Guard in any case not covered by instructions.

GENERAL ORDER 10: To salute all officers and all colors and standards not cased.

GENERAL ORDER 11: To be especially watchful at night and during the time for challenging, to challenge all persons on or near my post, and to allow no one to pass without proper authority.

MY KIND OF MARINE

Marines are about the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever witnessed. They treat their service as if it was some kind of cult, plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making themselves up to look like insane fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths, worshipping their Commandant almost as if he was a god, and making weird animal noises like a band of savages. They’ll fight like rabid dogs at the drop of a hat just for the sake of a little action, and are the cockiest SOB’s I have ever known. Most have the foulest mouths and drink well beyond man’s normal limits, but their high spirits and sense of brotherhood set them apart and , generally speaking, of the United States Marines I’ve come in contact with, are the most professional soldiers and the finest men I have had the pleasure to meet.

What does it take to enter boot camp?

Basic Requirements:
Male or female age 17-30.
If 17, have parental consent or be legally emancipated.
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
Be physically and mentally qualified by a MEPS doctor.
Pass the ASVAB with a minimum score of 33 AFQT.
Pass an Initial Strength Test (IST)
Have no felony convictions and not be on probation.
Have no outstanding warrants or parking tickets.
Have no illegal drug use other than marijuana and no drug use in the last 6 months.


What can you do to be ready for boot camp?
As a Drill Instructor, I recommend that you do the following to make boot camp MUCH easier on you:
Memorize the Basic Marine Knowledge before you ship.
Be physically fit. Be able to do the following on the IST before you ship:
1.5 mile run in under 11:00.
A minimum of 5 dead hang pull-ups.
A minimum of 60 sit-ups in 2 minutes.
You need to have your TOTAL CONCENTRATION on training....
Have all of your bills paid up through the end of bootcamp.
Have any personal or legal problems completed or put on hold.
Tell your family and friends to write you a lot to help keep your spirits up.
Don't bring ANYTHING with you except $10 cash (no more and no less) and pictures of your family and friends (NO PORNOGRAPHY!).


An Initial Strength Test Consists of :
(minimum requirements)
FOR MEN
2 dead-hang pull-ups
35 sit-up in 2 minutes
1.5 mile run in under 13:30
FOR WOMEN
12 second flexed-arm hang
35 sit-up in 2 minutes
1 mile run in under 10:30

Hardly worth the trouble.
When I served, we were there to free men headed for Korea and combat, so it was never an issue for me.
While there are a variety of jobs many women can capably perform as well as men, I happen to concur women should not be in actual on-ground combat with the men.

The reasons should be obvious, for the sake of the Corps - and the women.

I agree about women in combat units. There are too many things that can and will go wrong. The other comments and implications (or perhaps bad wording) was the primary thing that burned my hide. Enjoy the birthday celebrations! :-)

There are issues - and issues.
He chose a poor one.
Some male Marines are chow hall cooks.
Last time I looked, they are not required to toss many hand grenades.
Does that make THEM a less than useful, effective and honorable Marine??
Others haul garbage - hand out uniforms in Supply - work in Payroll.

Are we supposed to conclude the only GOOD Marines are those who fight hand to hand?
The only effective military groups, large or small, are those
ALL OF WHOSE PARTS FUNCTION WELL - AND TOGETHER.

The 'testosterone-filled combat man' could not dress, feed himself, get paid, receive mail, etc., or even GET TO the combat area without the other 99.99999 % of the MOS's supporting him!

Before the day is over (here in AZ), I'd like to add my best wishes to the Corps, and to those who have given their lives, and those who are now on the line and prepared to go into harms way to defend our freedoms and our republic. It makes me proud to share your birthday.

In the past, there have been many fine posts here about the Corps and Marines, current and past. But today I had to re-read one which, at the time it was posted, although it was brief, set me to penning a reply to the one who posted it. Unfortunately, work was pressing, and as those who procrastinate, I delayed my sending the reply, thinking in my mind that I wanted to "refine" it. Needless to say it was never sent.

However, I hope everyone here takes the time to re-read something that was posted here a little over one year ago. In addition to the initial post in the thread, which is really the part that got me, there is a lot of good information there.

I refer you all to Sorry Marine -- You're Too Old, posted by CHIEF negotiator. I'm sure CHIEF is one of those guarding Heaven's scenes.
