Hopefully, this Veteran's Day will be appreciated by more people. Unfortunately, my son's school doesn't consider it a "worthwhile" holiday in the school year to remember it. So? It's important to teach our youngster at home to value and honor our Veterans. Without them, we'd be non-existent.

Wow, Steve. You just hit a string in my heart that always responds to The Wall. Thanks for this thread.

Interesting that the Wall was designed as an insult to all who served in that war (black, below ground level, etc) by Maya Lin- but the veterans, themselves, have made it an icon of courage and sacrifice.

Thanks SAM for all you've done for us, and for me!

The Wall is beautiful. So are our Veterans.

When the design for The Wall was first released, there was a firestorm of objections. Most people thought it was an insult to those who fought in Vietnam. As I recall, the winner of the design contest was a young Asian woman.

Anyway, once it was built, and people came to see it, they sure changed their minds. Unquestionably it was a masterpiece, the most moving possible tribute to those whose names appear on it.

I'm not usually a fan of modern art and architecture, which I suppose is what this is. But once in a while a work of art transcends the common and trivial, and that's certainly what happened here.

I have been to The Wall also. What a special place. I made a rubbing for a friend who's cousin died in Nam. I was honored i was able to do that for him.

Thank you for the ping, SAM. One day I hope to be able to travel to D.C. and experience "The Wall" for myself.

The Viet Nam War veterans waited a long time, too long IMHO, for the "Welcome Home's" and honors they deserved. The ceremonies this week warm my heart.

To all the Viet Nam veterans out there, "Welcome Home" and Thank You for your service to our country. God bless you all.

Thank you SAM

I had an opportunity to visit the Traveling Wall many years ago.
It was very emotional and moving.
I went to see it with a Retired Marine Captain.
I loved him very much.

So many used to think that this collection of names wasn't important - when I think of the parents and wives and children and now grandchildren who flock to "their" name and know that they mattered and will not be forgotten. It may be even more important for these brave souls who were ignored at the time to now be singled out by name forever.

Mega Thanks for the post Sam.

To all my fellow NamVets and Vets of every war, where blood was shed and souls let loose, if you have never been to "The Wall"...you must make the trek for our lost brothers and sisters.

There are hardly words to describe a visit to the wall. If you've never been, you should consider making the journey.

The Mall in Washington, D.C. tends to be a noisy boisterous place with political and commercial events always in progress. However, The Wall is almost a place of silent reverence. Everything else faded into the background as I entered the memorial area. Soon, the black wall of names towered over me, and an immense feeling of sadness enveloped me. I simply could not comprehend the loss, the sacrifice, of so many. I'm not sure I've ever recovered from that day...I'm not sure I ever should recover. This is a memory I'll carry with me always.

We never forget....
