Sam - I agree with your position in general. BUT, Alabama law does not allow for a statewide recount. Seigelman can ask for a recount COUNTY by COUNTY, but he has to pay for it - and his request must meet one of the three criteria that Riley's statement mentioned. A CLOSE ELECTION is not one of the reasons. If he can show just cause he can get his recounts COUNTY by COUNTY - but he can NEVER get a statewide recount.

I heard on the Mobile radio this afternoon that there have been nor were there any complaints of 'wrong-doings' filed anywhere in the whole state.

Governor Riley has won, the voters have spoken.

Well if Alabama law says that a close election is not a reason to have a recount (rather curious, because you'd think that a close election is the only reason you would want a recount in the first place), then I guess that is the way it is and I'm glad the good guy won. But that means if next time the bad guy wins by 43 votes or something in Alabama, we here won't have the right to bitch about it.

Personally, I'd like to see Riley win on a recount so that the 'Rats can't make hay of this on a national level.

The county-by-county law was put into effect to prevent folks from challenging and demanding a entire state recount. There is a historical problem with Alabama vote counting and several counties have demonstrated problems in accurate counting for numerous elections.

Alabama is simply discovering that it is no better than Florida and has a major problem. There should be no screw-up in the first place. We should stand by this state rule...but we should also examine how to change the law and allow more accurate vote-counting. I don't want dead folks voting or some idiot democrat trying to change an entire race in some po-dunk county to benfit his party. I just want a honest race from day one.

And let it also be added, that the law you mention was passed YEARS ago by a legislature that was about 98% Democrat.
