I am familiar with Pelosi a little more than most here, because she is "my" Congresswoman.

Pelosi's becoming head Congressional Demo is perhaps the shining moment thusfar of the California Democratic Party machine that has its roots in the 1960s administration of Governor Edmund G. "Pat" Brown, Sr. ("Jerry" Brown is Edmund Jr.). It was that machine that also gave California the following figures: Assemblyman/S.F. Mayor Willie Brown, State Senator/S.F. Mayor George Moscone, S.F. Mayor/Senator Dianne Feinstein, Congresswoman/Senator Barbara Boxer, Governor Jerry Brown, Congressman Phillip Burton, and his brother, the throroughly profane and unpleasant Congressman/Assemblyman/State Senator John Burton. John was the ringleader of the group after the retirement of Demo powerbroker Jess "Big Daddy" Unruh.

After Phil Burton suddenly died in office, he was succeeded as one of S.F's two Congressthings by his widow Sala. Sala contracted cancer, and is said to have selected the fundraising marvel Pelosi as her successor as she lay dying.

Pelosi is nearly invisible in San Francisco except among those who are heavily into S.F. politics. She does no campaigning here because there are NO Republicans -- and I mean NONE -- of any significance in the city. She runs virtually unopposed every term except by fringe candidates.
