Top terrorist figures met in South America to plan new attacks on U.S. targets

The tri-border region shared by Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil is a sparsely populated intersection of dense jungle and porous borders.

CNN's Mike Boettcher reports on what sources say was a meeting of terrorist operatives in a remote jungle area of South America -- and why antiterrorist experts are taking another look at activities there. Watch "Wolf Blitzer Reports" at 5 p.m. EST Thursday.

South America is a perfect meeting place for the terrorists. They can work hard, very hard, planning the next attack against America and then duck across the Mexican border for some babes, booze and gambling in Las Vegas before returning to their homes in Saudi.

This is not a new story.

Argentina has a very large Syrian and Lebanese population. Oddly enough, the Syrians have made the Argentine Armed forces one of their power bases. Argentina's last president, Menem, is a Syrian, although he converted to Catholicism.

This tri-country zone is crawling with "Palestinians" and other Islamic types who have turned the area (A very large area of rain forest and jungle) into a base where they smuglle drugs out and smuggle arms and goods in. It's condoned because it's a way for Argentines, Paraguayans, and Brazilians to avoid heavy import taxes on luxury goods, and even mundane stuff like appliances.
