On a search I got census figures for SD (2001): Total 756600. There sure are a lot of registered voters. Someone should definitely look deeper here! Think I will try to find # of children etc.

An editorial on Opionion Journal, tonight, mentioned that Johnson was behind until an extra 500 votes were found from an Indian reservation, which gave him a small edge.

I don't know the the writer was speaking figuratively or not, because that is how Tiny Tom won his first election to congress.

I'm kind of impatient with this thread. Does anyone have a thesis? Anyone care to give us a summation?

If so, here are the ways to FREEPING:

If you want to clearly STATE THE CASE, I'll provide more definitive information about who to contact....

Based on the numbers posted by nothingnew at #29, the census #'s really indicate some sort of problem, particularly in the following counties.
County # Registered
to vote
Population
(18+ yrs. of Age)
Too Many
Registrations
Turned 18 yrs. old
in 2000
Unexplained by
Post Census
Birthdays
% of Population
Registered
to Vote
Bennett 2369 2273 96 144 104.22%
Campbell 1412 1312 100 52 48 107.62%
Dewey 4129 3649 480 258 222 113.15%
Haakon 1655 1632 23 63 101.41%
Hand 3024 2821 203 102 101 107.20%
Hanson 2527 2213 314 103 211 114.19%
Harding 955 912 43 49 104.71%
Jackson 1880 1861 19 119 101.02%
Jones 882 880 2 35 100.23%
Mellette 1416 1348 68 82 105.04%
Shannon 6990 6831 159 627 102.33%
Sully 1174 1158 16 44 101.38%
Ziebach 1606 1499 107 114 107.14%
= 30019 28389 1630 1792 582

Data has obviously changed somewhat since 2000, but how significantly? Notice the difference between state-wide population figures for 2000 and 2001:

2000: 754,844 per your posts at #14 & #17
2001: 756,600 per Robert_Paulson2 at #15

The state-wide population increase between 2000 and 2001 was 1,756. What sort of change took place during 2002? Regardless, I don't see how it could explain away the numbers in these counties, even if registration was manditory.

98% in Shanon went to Johnson?

AND Shannon had the lowest percentage of registered voters turning out, the only county in the state in the 40's, against a state average of over 70 percent turn out.

Smells like a (Thune) ballot bonfire to me. Would this have been doable for the 'Rats? Can we please impound the voter rolls there?

Oops. McPherson County 37% more registered voters than population...tsk, tsk.

100 more voters than population. Should be the first batch anybody looks at.

AND his % was so high because all the Iraqis are getting farm aid...

Viewed in this light, SD results make perfect sense.

while I realize SOME folks who were seventeen turned eighteen, I suspect SOME folks died TOO, during that period. I wonder if they were deleted off the registration rolls or if they too were resurrected to "get out the vote"?

Something awry here. WHO is working on this? Thune's crew? Ashcroft? Bush's team? or just Freepers?

Thune may have lost fair and square. I doubt it. Is this the state where the Indian lady was paid by dems to "get out the dead" and was forging signatures on ballot applications?

Seems MORE than a recount is in order.
