Thanks! I was hoping my fellow Freepers would add relevant articles to this thread. We'll keep bringing this unpleasantness up periodically. :-)

Tom Daschle announced that he will be replaced on the ballot by LBJ and because he's dead (voted twice in this election) his widow, Lady Bird, will serve in his place. From the movie Blazing Saddles:
"You'd do it for Randolph Scott." ;-)

I think this "loss" by Thune will be a good thing----it will force a vote fraud investigation and maybe bring the Rats dirty tactics into the daylight. This is my hope as well. To borrow a term I heard a lot during the night, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Story about malfunctioning balloting machines from the Mitchell South Dakota Daily Republic. (posted FWIW - this probably is nothing.)

Story excerpt:
All eyes were on Davison County during the wee hours today because a vote-counting machine malfunctioned, leaving in doubt statehouse and county races, and possibly the contest for U.S. Senate.
County Auditor Kathy Goetsch initially said repairs were expected by 1:30 a.m. today with final tabulations anticipated by 2:30 or 3 a.m. if all goes well. However, at 2 a.m., technicians had not yet arrived, and it appeared they would not arrive in Mitchell until about 2:30 a.m., pushing tabulations to at least 3:30 or 4 a.m.
"This error did not show up on our the test. I need to make that clear," Goetsch said Tuesday night. "I don't know why. ... We've had this system since 1998 and we've never had a problem like this."

In 2000, it was Flori-duh. In 2002, it's South Duh-Kota.

It can and should be pursued as a contested election by John Thune. Thune won a close race and it was likely taken from him via fraud. Sudden 100% increase in voter turnout in one county since 2000, when all other counties had similar patterns, defies logic.
To pove it, we need show how and where the extra votes were manufactured. My guess is it can be done.
Voter registration grew in a few select counties in South Dakota. Those counties - in particular Shannon - had allegations of fraud. In November, voting patterns changed dramatically from previous elections.

I disagree. Letting the democrats get away with this ONE more time, is impossible. We've GOT to stop it.

I don't know what The Little General was thinking - he must have been sure that the Democrats were going to take the whole enchilada, and that the Democrats in the national media would be able to bury this South Dakota business under the cover of THAT news. For political incorrectness, your sentence just won the brass prize. Douchebag will award it, bring some phonebooks for him.

We've GOT to stop it.Yes, Ashcroft was a "gentleman" in Missouri, 2000, and let Carnahan's widow win the election when the voting areas were illegally kept open late for the bused in voters. It's long past time to let the Dems steal elections. They tried, oh how they tried in Florida, but the fix should not be in anymore.

They pay Federal income tax. But they don't pay property tax, or tax from income generated off Tribal or trust land. Example: if you are an Indian cattle rancher and you run your cows on Tribal land, you don't pay tax on the money you make when you sell them.

I disagree. Letting the democrats get away with this ONE more time, is impossible. We've GOT to stop it. The more I think it over, the more I agree with you now. We've rolled over enough times already, to the point they really think they can get away with it. Landrieu 6 years ago (sp?) and Sanchez/Dornan spring to mind.

Bless your heart, I was just thinking about what you said, too. LOL. I think you remember the (shudder) Gore episode that put us all in such agony. This particular thing won't be like that. The Feds are investigating the voter fraud in SD, along with that States top cops. That will continue, no matter what Mr. Thune does or doesn't do. All Mr. Thune asked for is a recount. He said he would hang in for the rest of it, if need be. WONDERFUL man. That investigation went Federal because of the Indian reservation being USED to accomplish democrat goals. It went State because South Dakota doesn't want that happening in it's house. :) Either way, as long as Thune will stand, I'll stand with him. I feel sure you will too. :)

You're right about it being totally different with investigation going on, as opposed to Jesse Jackson-style protests of imagined "disenfranchisement" in Florida, immediate court filings there, etc. I thought Mondale might pull that in Minnesota - thankfully I was wrong. I have to admit being very pleased with the apparent lack of Democrat cheating in most places this time, as well as with the Republican effort to get the vote out.
We had poll watchers for the first time in every precinct. The Republicans also had them watching which registered Republicans had voted and who hadn't, then going outside the 200-foot barriers and calling those who hadn't and asking them if they needed a ride, gently reminding them to vote, etc. Usually the unions here put on a massive push, and it appears they were actually dwarfed this time by the grass roots. It didn't hurt that the teachers here were pi$$ed at Cayetano and refused to endorse a Democrat for the first time in eons. They didn't endorse Lingle either, but by not endorsing the Dem they said a lot. The keiki (children) are a big issue here, and if someone's kid's teacher supports a candidate, they're more likely to vote that way.

I have a question -- Does anyone know what if any validity check is being done in the South Dakota recount?
