On Sunday, October 20, 2002, at 4:20 p.m. EDT, FOX 23 News videographer, Brandon Mowry, was filming a weather segment for WXXA-TV in Albany, New York. While the camera was still running, he lifted the camera 180 degrees to get another shot of a plane taking off. He did not know at the time that he caught seven frames (1/3rd second) of digital videotape of the jet airliner passing out of the upper right corner and a strange, missile-like, unidentified aerial object rapidly passing through sky and seemingly through a cloud estimated to be at 5,000 feet or more. Darker blue "line" at center of frame is the rapidly moving unidentified object that is enlarged inside the white oval in lower left corner.

November 4, 2002 Albany, New York - There has been much speculation about what the strange object is that has a long body and seems to blend into the blue sky, but also has white fin-like structures at the front and back of the object. (See Earthfiles 10/29/02) Today, I talked with FOX23 videographer, Brandon Mowry, at the station and learned that his assignment desk has received word that the investigation has now branched out from the FBI to a military intelligence unit at Fort Hood, Texas, southwest of Waco.
Fort Hood Military Reservation southwest of Waco, Texas, and north of Austin, a Defense
Department center for heavy artillery development and biological and germ warfare defense training.

Damn. Now I have to polish the tin hat before I put it away. I hate when that happens. The fingerprints are a real pain.

Read and watch the tape. The "insect" flies above the cloud. Pretty good fakery.

Your picture has an unusual characteristic in common with the New York photo. the "wings" are slightly offset where they attach to the "rod." Do you know what mechanism accounts for this? Would the answer enable us to come to a conclusion?

Watch the video. The cloud is panning through the field of view very fast -- which would be unusual for a cloud. Therefore the camera itself is panning very fast. Therefore any near field object, such as a bug, would also move through the frame very fast.

Plus, if it has been a missile, wouldn't it have blown up when it hit the ground?

I live just outside of Albany (Niskayuna), and this is no big thing here. I'm over in Latham. This was reported on FOX23 News, and the following morning, CBS' The Early Show had a live interview with Brandon Mowry. Given the competition among local newscasters, no doubt WNYT and WRGB decided not to cover the story for fear of losing viewers. I can't imagine Liz Bishop covering a story on "Rods".

Here's another "insect" for people to debate
To: spycatcher
That one appears to be a piece of tinfoil.

Video of rods not the same as insect blurs
The guy in the audio clip claimed 1/10,000 sec. shutter speeds would prove that rods are not insects.
I'm not at all knowledgable of cameras, but is equipment with such high shutter speeds readily available?
To: mikegi
It would have to have been a pretty big ass insect, as the video footage showed the object obscured by clouds as it passed to the upper left corner of the screen.
Doesn't mean its not a hoax, but pretty clear its not an insect.

Thanks. I took down the info and will look it up. Sorry to be so ignorant but I guess I can't know EVERYTHING (smile).

I have no opinion on fact or not - but in one picture I saw I thought the 'object/rod/insect' was above the airplane's 'plume, exhaust or whatever - the smoke columns they put out'. Is that true, or am I just remembering incorrectly?

1/10,000 sec. shutter speeds are the fastest setting on good digital cameras. Saw one with 1/18,000 sec shutter speed.
Pretty much eliminates blur unless the insect is going Mach 2 or so
