God has a soft spot for fools, children, and swabbies. Good luck and Godspeed to our boys.

Does anyone know how a civilian can serve his country on a navy ship in a combat zone? I'm 52 years old, in very good condition, and retirement is boring! Income is not an issue.

"We expect to go into harm's way and we expect to make America proud," the admiral boasted. I resent MORE than a little that this was characterized as "boasting" by UPI.
The Admiral was making a solemn commitment to US, the grateful people, parents and family members of our dedicated sailors, soldiers, marines and aviators... not speaking from an attitude of boastful and braggadocios pride.
Speaking of commitment and covenant to ones countrymen, the giving of promise and oath, in light of the events of September Eleventh, hardly are 'boasting'. It is a pledge of sacred honor. Thank God almighty for pledges of honor from folks who MEAN WHAT THEY SAY.
The United States Navy is going to war. They know it. We know it. The enemies of freedom are damned sure of it, and will be suing for peace if they have any desire to keep their breathing rights on planet Earth. Our fine men and women intend to serve with every ounce of their being, and God willing, come home victorious and alive. The good Admiral was just letting us know. Just what I wanted to hear.
Godspeed the Connie. God Bless Admiral Costello, and our countrymen... please.

The Constellation is scheduled to relieve the carrier Abraham Lincoln.... Although the U.S. military campaign in Afghanistan is largely over, the Constellation's preparations for deployment were accelerated last summer and its departure date was moved from early 2003 to Saturday.
Somehow, I would not be surprised if the Abraham Lincoln stays in the gulf even after the Constellation arrives. The clock is ticking...

A friend's brother shipped out on the USS Constellation. God bless them all.

Not a good answer, but a direction to look. Civilian technicians are constantly being called out to tweak the new equipment on Carriers.
There may be something in that for you.

Does anybody have a larger photo of the ship leaving that the Tribune had on its front page today? Their website has the photo, but it's tiny.

I could kick myself for missing this yesterday. For some reason I thought it was going to leave today.
