Stockton resident N. Allen Sawyer quit Friday as head of the Governor's Office of Criminal Justice Planning after the FBI linked him to an investigation of alleged public corruption in San Joaquin County. http://www.recordnet.com/index.php

Included with Sawyer in the FBI investigation was San Joaquin Sheriff, Baxter Dunn and ex-lawman Monte McFall. According to the Records article, the FBI says the three men had a deal with Sunlaw Energy Corp. that would have "earned" them millions had the Port Commission chosen Sunlaw last year to build a power plant. When Sawyer met with two Sunlaw officials in March of 2001 he introduced himself as "a Member of the governor's office." A month later, Sawyer reserved a conference room at the Department of Transportation in Sacramento to discuss the deal with the two executives, Dunn and McFall.

The FBI will probably investigate for a year or two and leave town having done not much at all to anyone. Rats are immune to prosecution for the most part, unfortunately.

Yes, but hope springs eternal!! It took them over a decade, but the FBI finally put former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards away. Of course, he was out of office and had done all of the raping of the state he could have done at that point, but at least they finally succeeded!! Who knows, maybe they can follow suit in California. It's much like Louisiana in the fact that it's basically a completely different country in comparison to the rest of the union, but what the hell, let's be optimistic! ;)

Yesss! Just a day ago Doofus was up by 7 points. Now he is up by 3. This is fabulous. It definately smells like an upset now. It is is not only a statistical dead heat, but by Tuesday, the field poll might well show Simon in the lead.

Everyone must make sure they get out the vote for Simon!

The incument starts with huge advantages that should make him very difficult to defeat. We know his name, and we should feel at least somewhat comfortable with him. He also starts with enormous power and a massive fundraising advantage, as we have seen with Davis.

So if he can't get over 50% based on those facts alone, he's considered vunerable to a challenge. If you have more than 50% approval, as a general rule you won't have much trouble with re-election.

In this particular election, the incumbent has mismanaged his administration so badly that he is highly vunerable despite these advantages. The fact that he's below 50% means that there are a lot of undecided people, or that the challenger himself is popular.

In this case, Davis has managed to (unfairly) damage the image of the challenger, Bill Simon. The Simon campaign has also made a few key mistakes which make it appear significantly weaker than it actually is. However, the memory of those mistakes is fading, and Davis scandals are now popping up with considerable regularity. As a result, it's not surprising that Bill Simon's numbers are climbing, with the Davis numbers stagnant. The undecideds were looking for any excuse to dump Davis, and it looks like many have succeeded.
