They spent an hour hunting their prey, prowling a neighborhood a half-mile from where a mob of young men and boys beat a man to death on a porch a month earlier.
In hooded sweat shirts, the five males - ages 14 to 25 - scoured the streets for a prostitute, with rape on their minds, according to criminal complaints and delinquency petitions filed Friday.
And though they didn't find their prostitute, according to the complaints and petitions, they found a woman alone, forced her into an alley and got what they wanted.
The complaints and petitions that charged the five Friday with kidnapping and sexual assault gave the following account:
"Bitch, you're going to do what we tell you," one warned.
"Get out of your clothes, or we'll kill you," another ordered.
"I'm going to kill you if you look up," still another snarled. "My name is Lil Peanut. You better remember that."
One punched her. Another ran a knife across her throat. A third pressed his foot on her neck.
For 45 minutes, they took their turns, her burning clothes throwing an eerie light on the horrible scene as she begged them to stop.
And when police were finally called to the alley, the five males under the hoods bolted.
Things "just got out of hand," one said after his arrest.
The woman didn't want the five to do what they did, the 14-year-old admitted to police, before writing her a letter signed "Lil Peanut."
Charged in adult court with committing the assault that began Wednesday night were: Gary D. Harris, 25, of the 3000 block of N. Richards St.; Deandre Brown, 22, of the 1400 block of W. Atkinson Ave.; and Givante Antonio McGee, 18, of the 1400 block of W. Chambers St.
The three adult suspects were charged with five counts of first-degree sexual assault, and McGee also was charged with robbery, in the theft of the woman's necklace, and arson, stemming from her clothing being set ablaze.
The 14-year-old and a 16-year-old each were charged at the Children's Court Center with five counts of first-degree sexual assault and one of kidnapping.
The juveniles were in secure detention Friday and were due to appear in court Tuesday.
Brown, Harris and McGee were being held in the County Jail and are expected to appear in court downtown this weekend.
The five were charged with a rape that occurred about nine blocks from the porch where Charlie Young Jr. was fatally beaten by a mob made up of mostly teens on Sept. 29.
Police were called to the rape scene, an alley in the 2100 block of N. 15th St., at 12:30 a.m. Thursday. As the first officer approached, he could hear the 42-year-old woman begging the attackers to stop and could see two assaulting her, the complaints say.
Police, the complaints and the delinquency petitions give the following accounts:
The five got together earlier that night and, while riding around in Harris' car, agreed to gang rape a prostitute. They parked the car around N. 12th St. and W. North Ave. and set out on foot, looking for a prostitute.
McGee finally encountered the woman as she walked home from the Shell Food Mart at 1319 W. North Ave., where she had gone alone to buy a pack of cigarettes. After asking her for a cigarette, he thrust a hard object against her back and ordered her to walk toward the alley.
As he led the woman, the others spotted him one by one and followed at a distance.
After knocking the woman down in the alley, the assailants ordered the woman to disrobe, but before she could do so, they tore her clothing from her body.
"We're going to burn this (expletive) up," McGee said after raising a concern about fingerprints being found on the woman's clothing. The others agreed.
As McGee set fire to the woman's clothes, the others began assaulting her.
A woman passing through the 2100 block of N. 14th St. saw the rape. The victim's burning clothing shed enough light on the assailants to give the witness a clear glimpse of the assailants taking turns raping and holding down the woman.
At one point, the five backed away from the woman when they heard a vehicle they thought might be police. When they realized it was a street sweeper, they resumed the assault.
The attackers ran in different directions when the first officer finally arrived at the scene.
The 16-year-old ran to McGee's home and was greeted at the door by McGee's girlfriend. As she eyed his disheveled, dirty clothing, he explained that he, McGee and some others had been involved in a robbery.
He later told police that he did not want to admit to McGee's girlfriend that they were involved in a rape because he didn't want McGee to fall into disfavor for "cheating" on her.
The complaints detail only how one of the five was arrested. Brown, they say, was taken into custody when he returned to the scene for his hooded jacket.
Neighbors on North Ave. near the gas station where the woman bought her cigarettes were on edge Friday afternoon.
"I don't trust a soul," said Serena Powell, 32, who lives near N. 17th St. and W. North Ave.
She said she remembers the area being a safer place to live, where it was fine to sleep with the door open. Those days are gone, she said.
Some people stay inside when trouble arises because they're scared to do anything, she said.
Wednesday's rape happened near the Northside branch of the YMCA, home of the Young Leaders Academy charter school.
"Our work with young people is focused on building positive characteristics within them and helping build strong character," said Joe Cockrell, a YMCA spokesman. "I think that when things like this happen, it's a wake-up call to the entire community. We do everything that we can, but we're not the answer. We're part of the answer, but not the answer."
WTF?!
Forgot to add that above. "Dang hunny, I was just out a robbing and stuff."
"Otay, as long as you was not wid anutter woman."
She's just very lucky that they didn't set fire to her clothing while she was wearing them.
Three local sailors have been convicted of gang raping a female sailor and videotaping the assault.
......or the perps.
Unfortunately, they're home-grown. They would be perfect as Zanu thugs in Zimbabwe, but what did innocent Zims ever do to us? The only hope would be for them to convert to Islam in prison and maybe Saudi Arabia would take them in afterwards. It could work, hey, Saudi took Idi Amin in.
It would be worth it to pay for a hit on these guys.
