RIP, FREE REPUBLIC, ANOTHER CONSERVATIVE WEB SITE GETS OVER RUN BY THE RATS!?
It appears that the rats, the socialists, the Islamofascists and other perverts of the Dark Side are about to close another conservative web site by overloading it and making it slower than trying to pour honey at 10 degrees below zero.
Until this is resolved, is there any way to stop the threads that devour bandwidth like Freeper of the Day, the Daily Dose and other nice threads that eat up bandwidth with all of the photos.
Stop the posting of pictures until this is resolved.
Not allow new comers to log on until this is resolved.
Then when the load is high bounce off the Freeploaders.
If not then this wonderful conservative site will go the way other conservative sites have after becoming targets of the dark side.

It has become basically impossible to read and reply to Free Republic.
Unless, something is done to stop this nonsense, we can kiss Free Republic good bye and chalk up another censorship victory to the Perverts of the Dark Side.

Most of the pictures are not hosted on FR servers, and thus little affect server traffic. All that originates from FR is a little bit of HTML and a URL that reference the picture.
The slowness is a problem, however, and a DDOS attack is a possibility.

To: Grampa Dave
Dave,
Tha slow respoonse is a network/hardware problem. A switch, a router, a bad NIC card, rogue processes on the server, ALL could cause the problem. Not to mention a DDOS attack.

Do the pictures take bandwidth on FR's (I assume) T1? Even if the pictures are located on other servers?
I suspect this problem is just a traffic problem. That is, interest in the election is peaking and a lot more folks are logging onto FR. Why? It got like this on the day of Wellstone's death. The obvious explanation is that many more FREEPERS are logging on when big events happen.
I suspect that the only solution is more servers or more bandwidth for peak usage.

Hey Gramps, I'm used to slow. It isn't going to hurt me any. Those democraps ain't going to distress me.
To: Grampa Dave
I know your frustrated, but this has nothing to do with vanities or images. Vanities dont hurt FR as much when John Robinson put paging in(1-50,51-100 at the top of each thread).
Its like blaming bad fuel economy on my streering wheel.
If it helps, I got to
http://beta.freerepublic.com (notice the www. is replaced with a beta. try that...

Maybe we need another fundraiser?
To: jbstrick
I'm not sure about the hardware explanation. I was up early early this am. FR was FAST! I think we're just getting too much legit traffic due to interest in the election. Could be DDOS also.

Do the pictures take bandwidth on FR's (I assume) T1? Even if the pictures are located on other servers? No. All that comes from FR is the HTML text that refers to the image on another server. The image data is transmitted directly from the other server to your computer.
However, if someone is attacking FR via a denial of service attack, they could also be attacking the servers where the images reside, along with any routers that those servers rely on...

No Daily Dose ?? OOOO Grampa, you're gonna have a lot of Bush Babes mad at you :)
I've been on most of the day (now on the beta site) this morning was fast as always, just started slowing down early this afternoon, could this be as simple as a lot of people trying to log on and comment ?? (seems like this is what happened right after Wellstone's plane went down) If this is a deliberate attack (hacker?) can it be traced ?

No wonder it's been slow the first half hour since I logged in.

Not noticable enough... I mean, threads used to be straight up 2000 on the Christian Chronicles and those long running types so moving everyone from 100 to 50 wont make a substantial difference.

Grampa, with all due respect............
peel open your wallet and pay for high-speed Internet access, would ya?? I'm no spring chicken myself, but I coughed up for high speed access and there is NO problem with download speeds, etc.
To equate slow refresh / download speeds with the downfall of FR due to Islamicists is a bit over the top, my friend. :)

The sky is falling, the sky is falling, we're all going to die! LOL, Dave, get a grip. If I had a dime for everytime FR slowed up like this over the years, I could retire.

It's a lot faster now.
To: smith288
It made a noticable difference to me. I changed my preferences to show 20 posts at a time and it's moving much faster. I'm keeping it this way until the problem is resolved. Otherwise, those long page loads put too much drag on the system and I was timing out even on a cable modem. I notice posting a reply is still slow, though.

I resent the use of the term "the Dark Side" in such a manner.
Here's Why. ;)
As for it being overrun, I'm sticking. I urge you to do the same.
