Republicans decry service as partisan [LOTT WALKED OUT!!]

Though it was billed as a memorial service, many irate viewers and Republican leaders said the gathering for U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone and five others degenerated at times into a blatant political rally.

"What a complete, total, absolute sham," said Vin Weber, a former U.S. representative from Minnesota. "The DFL clearly intends to exploit Wellstone's memory totally, completely and shamelessly for political gain. To them, Wellstone's death, apparently, was just another campaign event."

Son of a gun! I suggested this might happen, over in a previous thread. Looks like he had some brass after all.

And note that Ventura also walked out. He recently said he would probably make an interem appointment and that it would not be the winner of next week's election.

Just about the only ballsy thing Lott has ever done.

I just finished watching the memorial service (political rally) without interruption, not distracted with posting at FR. I'm a bit confused. Was Paul Wellstone the type of man who would have endorsed a memorial service to honor the tragically dead turned into a political rally for the thinly veiled purpose of energizing the flagging political fortunes of a particular party? I really don't know, so I'm asking that any Minnesota freepers familiar with the man's character please tell me. Was Paul Wellstone that transparent?... From what I am familiar with, from a distance over fundamental ideological differences on abortion, I would say the man was more genuine than what I saw and heard from the likes of Tom Harkin. Am I wrong? Was Paul Wellstone one to exploit grief and sympathy ... or was Paul Wellstone actually better than those crass political manipulators I watch tonight? I had little politically that I would have agreed with Wellstone over, but I thought he had more character than what I watched tonight.

I think they're triggering a BIG backfire. I hope my neighbors in MN see that.

Don't jump to conclusions; he may have just gotten lost looking for the porta-potty.

I hope all your neighbors in South Dakota saw that, too.

Ventura & Lott did the right thing. It was sickening to watch.

Don't jump to conclusions

Well, that would be apt advice if we were talking about Orin; you know, "Don't count your Hatch before he chickens." But Lott typically just stands there with his "Hit-me-again" grin. The fact that he actually LEFT is stunning.

"This was their event," said former U.S. Sen. Rod Grams, R-Minn. "They can do what they want. We're here tonight to say goodbye to a friend. That's all I'm thinking right now."

Translation: "My plane doesn't need any maintenance work now, thank you very much."

I lost my Grandfather two summers ago. It was two whole weeks before I could begin talking about him in past tense without choking up and beginning to cry.

Amazing how Wellstone has been gone just days, yet his own sons were able to talk of him in the past tense without so much as a crackle in their voices.

By now, I think SOME angel (whether in Heaven or Hell) has explained the truth to Wellstone as to whether he died by accident or foul play. I wonder after this partisan back-patter party he thinks his life's devotion to Democratic Party principles was worth it all?

You are a normal, loving human being with a soul.

After watching this debacle tonight, I am convinced Democrats are spawns of Satan.

I was thinking the same exact thing (sons). I lost my father a week and a half ago, and I cannot see how they can be so casual about it. My life has been very hard over the last two weeks.

I am a lot more impressed by Ventura walking out than Lott...

Ventura is a true independent. If the independent voters who will decide this race had the same reaction as Jesse, Coleman might just pull this out afterall...

The best news is that this is a big story in MN. It don't matter a damn what the rest of the country thinks, but if it isn't playing well in MN, that's what matters. I guess we won't know that till Nov 5th.

That is what flabbergasted and appalled me. The sons lost their father, mother and sister, yet were up there rallying the troops to get out the vote. I heard very little sympathy or sorrow in their voices. If I didn’t see it myself, I wouldn’t have believed it. As a matter of fact, I’m still not sure if I believe it.

Hope so, but that's a big "if." Additionally, Ventura's local popularity is at a low ebb these days.
