The Bush administration has revamped the charter of the federal advisory committee that addresses the safety of research volunteers, stating for the first time that embryos in experiments are "human subjects" whose welfare should be considered along with that of fetuses, children and adults.

The addition of human embryos to the committee's charge -- completed at the beginning of October but not yet posted on the federal Web site that lists such committees -- marks the latest effort by the administration to bring the unborn under the umbrella of federal health protections. In September the administration enacted a new policy that extends certain health benefits to fetuses.

Thank you for posting this, Pokey. Every human alive today began their life in the body at conception. Later, at implantation in a woman's uterine lining, a woman became pregnant and eventually delivered the 'human being' that came into existence at conception. The issues are all about life support once implantation has occurred, but that has as corollary that a human being sought life support with implantation ... non-living things don't seek life support do they!

His use of "excess human lives" was about the zenith of his pro-life subtlety and overshadowed entirely his stating that a question re: Roe v. Wade was "hypothetical".

It's thirty years of believing in these so-called "pro-lifers" that's got us where we are today: having to cheer the so-called "pro-lifers" who are ratcheting us into the MANUFACTURE and DESTRUCTION of human lives "killed by August 9, 2001" for the NIH (whose budget they've doubled) with open season in the private sector.

ABORTION IS A GOP POLICY.

I can't beg you strongly enough to please reconsider the placing of your faith in precisely that cadre who stated quite clearly they'd have forced the gamut of Deathist provisions (birth control, abortion, sterilization, amnio and artificial conception) on us had sufficient numbers not swallowed the government's "non-judgmental" educational efforts and DEMANDED these amoral, unholy and inhuman acts as "rights".

As for the "Catholic" bump, I think we would do well to remember that the WASP ruling elite are NOT friends of the Catholic Church and that the posturing during the last election and confecting of the RNC's "Catholic Outreach" committee did little more than set the stage for both the faith-based partnerships that are modeled on the political animals the IAF and Interfaith our radical bishops have supported with their CHD for 30 years as well as facilitate the government's ease of entre into the scandal with Keating and his committee of individuals whose motives are rightfully suspect.

Things are not what they seem.

I'm sorry to rant a bit but watching good folks continue to be taken advantage of by these shysters on a subject so dear to me as human life is enough to drive me to despair.

Truth will out, NYer, and I can assure you it won't be pretty. I think it far better to realize the gravity of our situation now rather than become bewildered and destroyed when we realize we've been had.

This is not simply "political." This is the use of proper scientific terminology. (And, I think, a bold stroke on the part of the Administration.)

The question will remain whether some humans are more human than others. But, at least there will be no pretending that zygotes, clones and other "balls of cells" are "not human" when research on them is contemplated.
