Bishop: I Knew Priest Supported Man-Boy Sex Priest Was Promoted Anyway Posted: 8:48 a.m. EST October 29, 2002
BOSTON -- The bishop of New York's Brooklyn Diocese says he knew a priest had endorsed sex between men and boys, but promoted him to head a Boston-area parish anyway.
That's according to a sworn statement made public Monday. Thomas Daily was chancellor, vicar general and auxiliary bishop in the Boston Archdiocese at the time, two decades ago.
Daily said he considered the Rev. Paul Shanley a "troubled priest" who needed help. He said he knew Shanley had attended a meeting of the North American Man-Boy Love Association and had spoken in favor of the group, but he had no reports of Shanley engaging in abuse himself.
The 71-year-old Shanley was indicted in June charges of raping or otherwise molesting boys while he headed St. Jean's parish in Newton from 1979 to 1989.
Maybe that will change someday, but when you think about it, it really doesn't matter all that much anyway . . .
Wrong.... his victims needed help, like clergy members removing known pedophiles out of the positions of trust they abuse to prey on helpless children, with the help of those like Daily.
Dear Lord in Heaven, please purge the American Catholic Church of these imbecile shepherds...
I believe it was St. Cyprian who wrote: "the floor of Hell is paved with the skulls of evil bishops".
Look at the example of Archbishop Pell in Sydney, Bishop Bruskewitz in Lincoln and Bishop Zen in Hong Kong. These are men who take their job and their responsibilities seriously.
There's a serious disconnect. I can't imagine someone being able to simultaneously think that both Pell and Daily are doing a good job.
Many, with an IQ over 70, stopped taking most of them seriously as moral leaders a long time ago. Now, most with an IQ over 70 (and especially Catholics, like me), are forced to take them seriously because their actions show that they place the welfare of children (particularly teenage boys) below every other priority. These American bishops, for the most part, have: 1) lied blatantly to Catholics, 2) cannot find the courage to deal with the homosexual problem within the Church (or to even name it), 3) have ignored the rape of thousands of teenage boys, 4) have moved molestor priests from parish to parish, 5) have not had the guts or courage or honor to resign in the face of what they've done.
40 years of liberal infestation could be fumigated right now. But it isn't happening.
Then by all means take these men seriously. But don't give them any more credit than you would give to any person who lives his or her life in an exemplary manner.
I would also strongly discourage people from getting too attached to these bishops, and from getting too involved financially in the local diocese. These men won't live forever, and there is a good chance that what is a marvelous church or cathedral today will be gutted by a depraved homosexual a few years from now.
When you stand before God on the day of your judgement, your bishop isn't going to be standing there with you.
Reminds me of the Gene Wilder movie where he plays a monk under a vow of silence, and the sign on the monestary says, "Keep thy Trappist shut!"
The Catholic church will see a decline in vocations to the religious orders as a result of this tolerance. Back in the days when Catholic families had 8 or 9 kids, it was good to get one in a religious vocation "to drag the whole family in", but now, with most Catholic families only being a moderate 3 or 4 kids, who wants to both give up grandchildren AND have their kid molested in a single-sex unsupervised community?
The biggest problem faithful Catholics have is that they like to blame other people for the things that happen to them. "Look at what this priest did," and "Look at what this bishop didn't do," are the most common complaints you here these days.
I was very fortunate because I was shielded from these problems by attentive parents who didn't trust anyone. Every person in my diocese from the school principal all the way up to the archbishop knew damned well that they should steer clear of my family. If any of us had been molested by a priest, my father wouldn't have called the police or a lawyer -- he would have beaten that priest to death right on the altar during Sunday Mass. And if he found out that the bishop had knowingly moved this priest from somewhere else to cover up a prior sexual assault, he would have done the same thing to the bishop.
well, I suppose one could say that there has been a prevailing, and nauseating wind, I might add ,that people that were perverts were "sick" and "wounded" and in need of sympathy....
That would go along with the liberal and "compassionate" thinking that started in the 60's that the mentally ill should not be incarcerated in prisons or hospitals and that is why they were released and played so much havoc on society's safety....
Maybe some people really thought for a nanosecond that pedophiles could be cured with treatment.....
But now we know differant...they can not be cured, they can not be allowed with children, and that is that...
The fly in the cream is this:...the Church has allowed so many homosexuals in as priests and Bishops that their credibility is nil....how can a homosexual bishop lecture let alone punish or banish a young pedophile priest....he can't ....he has no moral authority and would be afraid of reprisal....
IF we can ever rid our Church of this ilk....IF we can get rid of these Bishops that have been running their own little kingdoms....THEN we might have a chance to return to our true faith, with the help of God ....
For true Catholics, this has been a wake-up call ...
Regrettfully, I believe that a lot of them fit into this category.
Has anyone noticed a difference in their Bishop's Appeal letters?
Our letter specifically mentioned that the monies donated would NOT be used for any legal defense and lawsuits... (never noticed that LINE before)
Then I saw a local cable TV AD for the Bishop's Appeal fund...I never remembered that happening before (but I may have not been paying attention)
THEN we got another letter from the PASTOR encouraging all to donate as much as they could to the Bishop's Appeal....
I "recycled" all the letters - I've given generously for years but I unfortunately think the only thing that will get their attention is less money.
I still give to charities, but this one is not one of them - not with the atmosphere and "old boys" bishop/cardinal network protecting their power....
My faith is stronger than ever...but I know right from wrong.
The combination of a dangerous, incompetent clergy and a well-educated laity has made bishops almost extraneous in the Catholic Church. It is worth noting that only two of England's bishops refused to abdicate their authority to Henry VIII -- even then, the laity had a better grasp on the true faith than the bishops did.
