Perhaps he was aiding people, who would normally come under scrutiny if they tried to enter the US the legal way, to get within our borders?

Just a possibility.

Also, the liquor store in Alabama yielded no money so I haven't seen much evidence that he actually made a living by robbing, but of course it could be that such evidence will come to light eventually.
