The people at Stuart's Coffee House remember John Allen Muhammad as a quiet chess player who never wanted to be apart from his big, stuffed, heavy U.S. Army duffel bag.
At this point, nobody can prove that the bag Muhammad was lugging around contained the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle that police found in his car when he and 17-year-old John Lee Malvo were arrested at a Maryland rest stop early Thursday. By the end of the day, ballistics tests had tied that weapon to the bloody East Coast sniping spree that left 10 people dead.

I wish you success. I'll bet some of us would recognize the bosse's name, huh? (...and likely to be connected to a local mosque)
Same thing happened with my friend, Different cities and he is a Muslim from Morocco but other than that pretty similar circumstances. Odd thing is, since 9-11 we haven't spoke, I have left messages and never received a call back.
I had some suspicions even before 9-11, before I knew about sleeper cells etc. But after 9-11, I was really suspicious this guy was not on the up and up.
This sort of thing happens all the time. ALL the time. (Oh my, Paul Wellstone is dead?)
I only did 4 years active duty, some 30 years ago, but I had the definite impression you needed 20 then.
I was, however, in the reserves for a long time after that, until 1994, and can state as a fact that, to get the reserve pension at age 60, you need to have done 20 years total, active and reserve, unless there is a specific program for early retirements at the time you retire.

So from what I can glean from this, coupled with his past history (including guarding for Farrakhan) it would seem that Muhammed, at any rate, had some tendencies in this direction anyway. The description of his connection to Malvo seems to be based on some sort of domination -- though it's also clear that Malvo was willing to play along. Sounds like it was probably mostly Muhammed's idea.
All in all, this does seem to sound like a nutjob case -- though the motives seem to spring from Muhammed's involvement with Nation of Islam, and it bears looking into whether Farrakhan's folks have a more active involvement in the case.
I don't know if it was a paying job, but a former Tacoma neighbor said that Muhammed claimed to have been a bodyguard for Farrakhan at the Million Man March. (I haven't personally seen any confirmation of this claim, though.)
One rather doubts that a free-lance bodyguard would be allowed to get so close to Louie. So if (big if) the story is true, it hints at a possible source for money, and perhaps a profitable line of investigation for the Homeland Security boys.
Where did he get the Islamic leaflets?
Neighbors said that back around 1992, roughly the same time Muhammad lived in the Pinole house, FBI agents questioned them about the man."A long time ago, (the FBI) came over here and asked people about the people across the street," said a 21-year-old neighbor who refused to give his name. The neighbor said he and his parents lived on the street at the time. He added that the family believed the FBI questioning was related to Muhammad's military service.

No, we are still asleep.
Tacoma = police would respond to neighbors complaints of gunshots. Shelter = priest got noisy. Mohommad goes full blown terrorist = lives in car to avoid detection. It appears to me that Mohammad was trying as best he could to adhere to some of the rules of the Al Queda terrorist, keeping to himself, deceiving others. But since he is an American, and has American relatives, he is forced to live 2 different life styles. His relatives say he was warm and caring. The people at Stuart's say Mohammad and Malvo keep to themselves, never smiling (Atta trait). Mohammad is just another Richard Reed, with a specialty, a craft (snipper shooting).
Didn't the latest message from bin Laden mention something about the "youths of God"?
It just seems a bit too coincidental that we have a Muslim man and a Caribbean youth arrested in connection with the shootings, a message including a reference to the "youths of God" from bin Laden, an organization called "World Assembly of Muslim Youth", which is located in the heart of the "sniper"-zone and run by Abdula bin Laden and is also associated with Jamal Barzinji and others, who are connected to the Caribbean branch of Al-Taqwa ("Fear of God") and AMFT, which is located in Bellingham, Washington.

Ahmed Idris Nasreddin provides direct support for Youssef Nada and Bank Al Taqwa, both of which were designated as terrorist financiers by the Department of Treasury on November 7, 2001. On the same date, Treasury named four additional individuals as terrorist financers connected to al Taqwa: Zeinab Mansour-Fattouh, Mohamed Mansour, Albert Friedrich Armand Huber, and Ali Ghaleb Himmat. The al Taqwa group has long acted as financial advisers to al Qaida, with offices in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy and the Caribbean. Ahmed Idris Nasreddin and Youssef Nada are both founders and directors of Bank Al Taqwa. Usama bin Laden and his al-Qaida organization received financial assistance from Youssef Nada. Al Taqwa provides investment advice and cash transfer mechanisms for al Qaida and other radical Islamic groups.
