I saw you mention the situation in Venezuela on another thread, and thought you might be interested.
Unfortunately, I suspect the "sniper news" will flood the board to the point nothing else will be noticed... ah, well!

Those are interesting links, are there any articles about any more-or-less succesful Latin countries like Costa Rica which has allowed at least partially for a middle class? I think the whole problem in all these countries is that they try democracy but they don't have large middle classes and that's the only way you can have democracy work.

You hit the nail on the head- the great problem in all those countries is that most people are dirt poor, a very few are amazingly rich, and there's little between. A large middle class is the key to success with most any type of representative government.

Most of those dirt-poor people have the capabilities to become middle class, we see them doing it here quite often, it would be even easier in their own land with their own language but there are cultural and governmental reasons that can't happen. Instead of promoting democracy, we need to apply very strong pressure on these countries including Mexico ---or especially Mexico ---to allow for large middle classes. They don't wish to because the elites are very happy with the current set-up but it's the only way they can ever become stable healthy countries.
