Association and three of its Ohio affiliates have agreed to "make reasonable accommodation" for members with religious objections to funding the group's political causes.

In a "conciliation agreement" issued this week by the Cleveland District Office of the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, lawyers for the NEA, the Ohio Education Association, the Huber Heights Education Association and the Montpelier Education Association agreed they will handle requests from members who have differences on religious grounds in a "timely manner." They also agreed to help choose a charity to receive the dues and will require religious objectors to register their disagreements "once and not annually."

What about nonreligious people who object to the union activities (or religious people who object for nonreligious reasons)? Why should religion be given a special place in the law?

Everyone should be free to not pay union dues.

Now I lived in a conservative state, Alaska. When I drive 50 miles to tok where I can begin to pick up radio reception; all three stations are christian stations. Even here in Alaska, you quickly learn there are things you don't do like cheat the filthy IRS, or as a teacher withhold NEA dues; if you want to remain in the teaching profession. No fun being blackballed and having them waiting for you to make a wrong move.

I Know Christian conservative teachers that have fought the NEA and they are no longer teaching. School District keeps moving them around and generally making their lives miserable. I just attempt to make a difference at the school level. 80% of my students are affected by FAS to varying degrees and that in itself keeps me busy enough. More conservatives should become teachers and make a real difference. They will then also witness how our ed system is being federalized not privatized at an ever increasing rate.

Until you see the problems from inside the school, you will never gain a true perspective of what America is facing concerning education.
