Ashland Shooting: Sunday Updates
Various ^ | 10-20-02 | GRRRRR

Posted on 10/20/2002 4:13:26 AM PDT by GRRRRR

The other thread is running over 2800 posts...so here's a new place to post for Sunday.

Per FOXNews, a 10am EASTERN news conference is planned. Two travelers pulled off I-95 for dinner at a Ponderosa Steak House. The Man, 37, was shot in the gut while his wife stood next to him.

Bullet has NOT been removed from the man while, after surgery, he remains in Critical but GUARDED condition, however, x-rays are expected to provide some dimensional analysis of the slug. Further surgeries may be required on the victim, according to FOX and then the bullet is likely to be recovered.

Meanwhile, the "white" box truck/van that was found with a "Shell" in it at Dulles is reported to be a 7.62 (.030'??) OLD shell and NOT expected to be part of the "Sniper Shootings".

Multiple LEA's are now in Ashland, VA located about 80 miles south of DC to begin more site investigations at first light of dawn.

Numerous witnesses in the area saw the man fall down and provided aid to the man. The man was still conscious and spoke during the rescue. According to (spit) CNN, there will be NO news conferences from the hospital.

Over to you Laurie Dhue...GRRRRRollin'

good question....he was in surgery several hours...I imagine repairing damage done by bullet..bullet must be in a precarious place...he needs additional surgery.

Post on the lucianne thread says witnesses say the shooter was wearing a blue shirt, but I can't find that statement in the Washington Post article. Anybody know anything about that?

any medical types in here care to weigh in on the frequency of a bullet being left in a shooting victim ?

When the 15 y/o boy was shot, the doctor said the first duty was to stabilize and repair the wounds. If, in that process, the bullet or fragment(s) were attainable, they would be recovered. That, however, was not a priority.

If/when the bullet is not easily accessible and not impacting the "stabilize and repair", it can be left--for recovery at a later surgery when the patient/victim is in a more healthy status.

Very common. Since the wound was abdominal from what I hear, I'm guessing it lodged near the spine. But even if it didn't, it's still very common for doctors to leave it in place. You can cause more damage trying to extract it than just leaving it in place.

On the monster thread someone mentioned a report that cell phones had gone out. Any truth to that? If so, sounds like that Clancy novel about the special terrorism response unit and how they shut down cell systems to remove that communication means from the perps.

The story about the bullet still being in the body may be planted info to keep down panic. Then aagain in might make the shooter act sooner to make sure he gets his point accross that it is indeed him.Another shooting today IMO.

This is not uncommon--the surgery team needs to stop any bleeding and repair the damage to any organs as the top priority. As long as the bullet is not in a position to cause immediate further damage this is accepted procedure.

OK. You win. I'll have some of them when I get home from church. I just hope my stomach doesn't rumble during the service.

I have been monitoring the Three Cable News stations for over an hour now, and NO DISCUSSION about any witness from LAST NIGHT saying anything about SEEING a human being in any kind of shirt...only some saying a white mini-van/truck was seen leaving...with a ladder rack...the wife of the victim said she heard "a sound" that she didn't connect with a gunshot and her husband took about three steps and collapsed.

Day light is now coming up at the shooting site and CNN reporting that LEO's are now beginning search of the wooded area behind the Ponderosa Restaurant.

The Shooting victim is at Virginia Commonwealth University hospital, about 25 minutes away from the shooting site, still in critical condition. The man remained concscious during the ambulance ride, talking with EMTs and ER personnel. CNN still says they are not certain if the man will live or not in spite of the three hours of surgery.

thanks for all your responses

one wouldn't intuitively think that a ragged piece of lead floating around in there would be particularly healthy.
i'm wondering what, if any, kind of id can be accomplished via xray or other external device.
i'd imagine they might be able to estimate caliber, but not much more than that ...

I hadn't heard anything about any kind of description of the shooter. Since they were saying they thought (not confirmed forensically yet) he probably shot from the woods behind the restaraunt, I seriously doubt that anyone saw him.

They stopped all the traffic on several roads for several miles--I'm sure most of those people tried to call home to say they were going to be late :)
