This is not uncommon--the surgery team needs to stop any bleeding and repair the damage to any organs as the top priority. As long as the bullet is not in a position to cause immediate further damage this is accepted procedure.

Add to this the contamination of the peritoneal cavity from digestive tract, which increases the risk to the patient for finding the bullet. Hospital may not have had fluoroscopy available, or may have chosen not to turn patient over to get bullet at this time.
Although LEO's like to have the bullet, surgeons must first consider the risk to their patient. It will show on today's x-rays- and almost always LOE can determine the caliber, at least.
