Ashland Shooting: Sunday Updates
Various ^ | 10-20-02 | GRRRRR

Posted on 10/20/2002 4:13:26 AM PDT by GRRRRR

The other thread is running over 2800 posts...so here's a new place to post for Sunday.

Per FOXNews, a 10am EASTERN news conference is planned. Two travelers pulled off I-95 for dinner at a Ponderosa Steak House. The Man, 37, was shot in the gut while his wife stood next to him.

Bullet has NOT been removed from the man while, after surgery, he remains in Critical but GUARDED condition, however, x-rays are expected to provide some dimensional analysis of the slug. Further surgeries may be required on the victim, according to FOX and then the bullet is likely to be recovered.

Meanwhile, the "white" box truck/van that was found with a "Shell" in it at Dulles is reported to be a 7.62 (.030'??) OLD shell and NOT expected to be part of the "Sniper Shootings".

Multiple LEA's are now in Ashland, VA located about 80 miles south of DC to begin more site investigations at first light of dawn.

Numerous witnesses in the area saw the man fall down and provided aid to the man. The man was still conscious and spoke during the rescue. According to (spit) CNN, there will be NO news conferences from the hospital.

Over to you Laurie Dhue...GRRRRRollin'

I didn't see any, just references to that being done at Columbine.

Same here. Just references to "Ich bin Gott" written by Harris in the yearbook. Link, please...

"Soon after 9-11 the WSJ reported that the FBI had formed "black" squads, people who were NOT concerned about building cases but who would use dirty tricks (breaking in without warrants, for example) to prevent terrorism. Other investigators would continue to adhere to the rules."

I don't have any idea how much of this is currently being done by the FBI. Certainly they'd be swiming against the current within their own agency which is rarely productive to one's career. Decades ago "black bag" jobs were conducted by the FBI but more than a few careers were curtailed following the Church hearings. The message at that time was pretty damned clear. Don't do it.

However, we are now faced with an entirely different set of circumstances and the potential stakes are quite high indeed. Particularly if these terrorist cells are able to obtain something on the order of a small nuclear device.

One of the things that they are obtaining by this series of shootings is a fair amount of intelligence on how law enforcement agencies in the DC metro area respond to an act of terrorism. They appear to be learning a lot more us that we are about them.

Why, of course! And it was terrifying to see eight Virginia State Police cruisers pass by without a second look.

Why can't he comment on whether the bullet is in one piece or fragmented?

Almost the same organs and treatment (excisions) involved in the 13 year old middle school student.

Continued steady progress and expected full recovery (with some things like being a diabetic for the rest of his life... no spleen... possible immune system degradation)

To be fair, Scott....after a certain point there was no new information forthcoming. The newsies were repeating the original news and camera shots ad nauseum. So it was to be expected that the thread would take off in a different direction, imo.

Also massive "spillage" of stomach contents into the abdominal cavity. High risk for later infection.

I thought the doc said the man's spleen was not just destroyed but shattered into muliple pieces. Don't see how that can be the case unless the bullet itself fragmented into a jillion pieces. Doc declined to comment about that.

Maybe I should post this comment to Vanity, but I'll comment here first. Today's Washington Post indicates on the front page that the police stopped and handcuffed all drivers of white vans near Ashland, Virginia last night. The comment appears below a picture of a driver handcuffed and face down on the blacktop road surface. As terrible as the sniper situation is, this behavior troubles me greatly and smacks of a police state.

Are any of you troubled, also? Any comments?

This is great news. Sad though that he'll never be able to live a normal life. Poor kid. If they shoot another kid, LEOs better be prepared for what could be a violent reaction from the public.

...shattered into muliple pieces.

The spleen is prone to do that, hence all the ruptured spleen cases in blunt trauma to the torso.
