D.C. KILLERS: TERRORIST CELL?

October 18, 2002 -- A NON-STOP frenzy of psychological profiling has been gushing out of televisions, newspapers, and magazines since the start of the "Sniper Killings" in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., earlier this month, producing in almost every case a rather too pat portrait of a killer (or perhaps two) who are white, in their 20s or early 30s, have military experience, enjoy exercising the god-like power of life and death, and are alienated from society.

I understood that counter terror types hate coincidences.

What would this lady have said?

The easy knock is that x out of 10 people in any mall in the DC/Virginia area work for the Feds, but an FBI cyber counterterror specialist.....

But now i'm repeating myself and hope other more relevant people are investigating with an open mind.

Thanks for the warning about that movie. I generally skip remakes. The original Day of the Jackal was a great movie, and maybe our investigators should take a look at it.

By the way, I read some place yesterday about the cops checking underneath one of those white vans that they had stopped.

I am very aware of that area also.

Mintues after this shooting happened I said to myself and my wife that the shooter was on the opposite side of route 50. The parking lots on that side are very dark at night and a perfect distance for no witnesses and a fast get away. I don't think the shooters went west on Rt 50. I think they took the exit road up to Wilson Blvd and took a right heading east on Wilson Blvd into Arlington.

They could pick up many back roads out of the area from that point and would never have to hit a major highway or road block. IMHO

Don't reporters go to supervisors for that sort of statement?

Why would they, when they can simply ask the head of the investigation? And he, in his graciousness, says the nice things about a fellow FBI employee that one would expect him to say (perhaps - probably - he even talked to Linda's supervisor himself).

Look, until you can determine precisely what sort of work she was doing as an NIPC cybercrimes analyst, I don't think you should substitute the eulogizing of her colleagues to draw sketchy inferences.

I don't think I'll be able to make that precise determination. As the hometown paper story said, the nature of her work was classified, and she wouldn't talk about it.

But I do know, from a different story, that she was involved in a program for the FBI to give tips and warnings to private businesses. And I can guess what sorts of tips and warnings the FBI has been giving local businesses for the past two weeks.

That would be one route. Another is to go about 50-100 yards west on the access road, make a right into the apartment complex, and go another 200 yards to Wilson.

Or, take the little shopping mall alley directly adjacent to the parking lot (next to the liquor store), drive up to Wilston, make a quick left and then right to get onto Wilson Blvd. Or just head another mile to the entrance to I-66 (by the Metro station).

But that's the point, you're right, there are several egress routes from the school parking lot.

In general terms, NIPC has no other mission than "to give tips and warnings to private businesses." That is their job.

Also, it seems that anyone working with NIPC would have clearance and be working on classified material. That also is their job.

From the NIPC web site:

"Located in the FBI's headquarters building in Washington, D.C., the NIPC brings together representatives from U.S. government agencies, state and local governments, and the private sector in a partnership to protect our nation's critical infrastructures."

Seems to me you've just given a very good explanation of why Linda Franklin would have been involved in the sniper investigation, and of how Gary Bald would have become familiar with her work.

Yeah, everybody is an "expert". I'm surprosed thay haven't interviewed Tom Berringer, who played a sniper in a movie. Maybe the experts would work vigorously on the case rather than que up for interviews. Everybody has a theroy but nobody has any results.

Best put away the news cameras untill they have the suspect(s) in jail with a pile of evedence on top of them. Hell, no wonder they get fooled by fake witnesses. It becomes another chace to get on the news.

Donald Stone is the one who informed me about Gary Bald, the new guy on the job. I think Bald was in the saddle a week when the beltway sniper began shooting.

The conclusion from this is that the school parking lot on westbound Rt. 50 provided the ideal line-of-sight into the HD parking lot, is in cover of complete darkness,

That reminds me of when I was a kid, and we would play hide-and-seek outside at night. The house was well-lit, and I would "hide" by going about 10 feet beyond the edge of the lightbeam in the back yard. Everyone was completely unable to see me and they would run around calling for me to come out, all the while I was right there in the open sitting on the lawn, about 30 feet away, able to see everything they were doing.

Terrorism is the correct way to look at this. I could not believe that the police didn't go over to this area the night it happened. The shooter/s didn't even have to get out of their car or van from that vantage point.

I will even go as far to say I think this cell is working out of Northern Virginia. The two night shootings that happened in NoVa were to prove to the public that the Kensington and Baltimore suspects were not involved. "See public, you must stay terrorized, we are still out here."

I wonder if the investigators are looking at sub-contractors who might have had business in the areas of the shootings. Could they even find that kind of information?

I'm tired of all this speculaton too, but I beleive this: whether or not this sniper(s) is Al Queda, you can be sure Al Queda and their ilk are watching this saga with interest. If one guy can cause so much fear, imagine what 5 or 10 can do. This, I'm afraid, may be only the beginning.

If you are going to post a NY Post cover story, you HAVE to show the NY Post cover. NY Post covers are the best part of the paper.

I love opening a NY Post like this on the subway right in front of someone who looks say....less than conservative. Then again, a headline like this gets the whole subway car looking at it.

Scary times call for basic defense. It's all about the 2nd Ammendment.

That's why the Libs are praying (to whatever dieties they worship) that it IS a white right-wing gun nut. If it turns out to be AQ, we're going back to '76 baby (1776, that is). I wouldn't be surprised to see the Supremes decide that any gun regs are unconstitional.

BTW, Caleb Carr's father was one of the original Beats (before the label was even coined) when they were all undergrads at Columbia right after WWII. The early Beats where high IQ bohemians that liked to hang around street toughs and get involved in petty crime.

When Carr's dad was indirectly associated with a homicide, Kerouc, Ginsberg, et al ended up dropping out. And thus began their original wanderings with Neal Cassidy at the wheel as portrayed in 'On the Road'.

I have to say, however, that I just find the possibility that the DC attacks are moslem terrorism to be hard to believe. Not that it couldn't be the case, but it would be so stupid on their part. It strains credulity to imagine that the people behind Al Queda or the Waqf or whatever it is could be this assinine.

I'm afraid I don't see why you would call this kind of terrorism is "so stupid". One of the stated goals of AQ is to disrupt the American economy. Suppressing the public's willingness to go out (by shooting people randomly, including at gas stations, malls, and store parking lots), for even a moderate percentage of the people, would have such an effect.

Another goal would be to instill a sense of helplessness in the populace by demonstrating that the government cannot protect the people (the fallacy of this belief notwithstanding - but that's a second amendment issue). From all reports, there is certainly such a feeling growing in the hearts and minds of many DC area residents, if not the nation.

While a sniping tactic is certainly reprehensible, it is certainly a less costly alternative to other unprecedented attacks like 9/11.

Because the Islamofascits believe the worst of American culture - and that we cower when threatened (a la Black Hawk Down, the USS Coles, etc.) - the sniping would be aimed at enabling the gun grabbers while instilling general fear.

Having said all that, I'll finish by saying that it is my opinion that a foreign controlled (Islamic) terror cell is behind the sniping, but that the truth will only be known when the perps are caught. Let's all pray that this happens soon.
