NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--At least one member of al-Qaida now in custody has told U.S. investigators he witnessed training by three man sniper squads practicing to launch attacks on U.S. soil, ABC News reported Thursday.
The claim is made by an al-Qaida member being held for allegedly plotting to blow up the U.S. embassy in Paris, the report said.
The man was questioned by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation this week in Belgium, ABC News said.
While officials investigating the recent sniper attacks in the Washington D.C. area are looking into the possibility of a terrorist connection to the shootings, it isn't their leading theory, the network said.
ABC News and other news organizations have reported FBI agents are questioning some al-Qaida members held in Guantanamo, Cuba, about the possibility of a terrorist link to the sniper attacks.

Did this Al-Qaeda guy create this story before or after this story broke front page news. This Sniper story has been all over the World. He could have read this. I won't believe this until we have solid proof that this sniper is Al-Qaeda. They are notorious liars. I agree.

Would Ali Mohamed, who spent so much time at Ft. Bragg and who was largely responsible for developing the al Qaeda training program, have gone through sniper training in the U.S.? Interesting possibility!

I would say they sniper(s) was planning on 11 deaths.. If they were planning on 11 deaths, do you think that 11 could indicate November--11th month...for another major hit? You never know what these nutcases are thinking and planning, but put nothing past them..Plus, there's been another warning issued by the govt re another one..

Why should I beleive him? In custody. Basically a prisoner who hates the U.S. otherwise it's unlikely that he'd be in custody if not considered dangerous. Loooks like he's trying to grab credit for his evil cause.

My point....just that those 3-4 who were recently picked up in Oregon, were originally found by a couple who couldn't figure out what all the noise (high powered rifles) were near their home in a somewhat remote place.....I am NOT indicting law abiding, NRA card carrying Americans....just wondering what these Islamics were doing .....hiding, what they were doing, from their Portland neighbors - some of whom they told something along the lines "America deserved 9-11." From that "notification" on, they were followed, and ultimately tied to enough that they were arrested....did you not hear all this?

Yeah that's the one

I wonder... Not sure who to believe anymore these days. Did seem a little odd that he'd get OUT of the van, though.

But wait, Islam meens Peace they wouldn't do anything bad would they? /sarcasm

Nothing magic about the number 3, but teams do help in many ways. The shooter may drive around and arrive in a vehicle with no weapon at all, and get the rifle shortly before the attack off site. Another vehicle is useful for doing pre attack recon, then calling via cell phone to the shooter and driver. The recon vehicle can be used for a cutoff car to block pursuit. Other vehicles can be prepositioned for switching. The variations are extensive.

yeah you may be right, but the attacks are falling under odd times not to be a terrorist attack, Bali, Kuwait, Yemen, VA/MD/DC
It all fits together.

He certainly would have some knowlege of sniper tactics.
I have to go out for a bit, but will check my notes when I return.
To: aristeides
According to this
http://www.library.cornell.edu/colldev/mideast/alimo.htm, he was only a supply sergeant assigned to Special Forces.
Nonetheless, I still think I read somewhere that he actually trained special forces...
Wasn't the head of the al Qaeda cell that was planning to blow up the U.S. embassy in Paris trained in the al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan?
I don't know.
To: areafiftyone
There were stories of Al qaeda training sniper teams in November of last year. During the Afghan war against the Soviets sniper teams were commonly used against Soviet troops. Chechen and Albanian sniper teams have been used.
The above facts do not make the DC sniper an Al Qaeda operative but they do not make the DC Sniper a lone nut either.

When it is confirmed by the Gitmo guys then I will believe it is Al-Qaeda. They don't have access to Newspapers or radio and they wouldn't know anything about this story. If they say that they trained or knew that Al-Qaeda was planning sniper attacks then I will believe it was Al-Qaeda. You are right it could be a lone Muslim with his own agenda for Jihad.

NO! I haven't heard anything about any of that. I've been working 12-13 hour days but it seems as though I should have heard something!
