Your comment is disgraceful.

Australia has a population under 18 million. Therefore, in proportion to population, their loss of 200 is comparable to our loss of just under 3,000.

You are obviously ignorant of the history of Australia, particularly their brave showing in WWII.

Take a long hike across the outback without water, loser.

Actually, in a T.V. documentary Australia was showcasing the destruction of some of the guns turned in/bought back/confiscated. I clearly remember watching them cut up a Browning A-5 shotgun, (semi auto), a bolt action rifle, (not semi auto), and what appeared to be a single action revolver, (not a semi auto).

I would be very interested in seeing some documentation of what they have put on the books. It was my understanding that they had done something similar to Britian.

I've written several Aussie newspapers with a small statement of support and solidarity. It would be great if many of us did so as well.

Eureka is right, 200 actually represents a greater segment of Australia's population than 3,000 does of ours. Australia's population, I believe, is under 10,000,000, less than greater New York's.

This event has had every bit of equivalent impact in terms of families affected.

Besides which, Australians are probably the foreign country most supportive of the U.S.

I agree! The Australians can join us on the front lines...

Interesting using the 9/11 comparison because as the death toll climbed higher for that country, my husband mentioned it was a high number for such a sparsely populated country.

The Aussies will wake up to this reality soon: They have 2 choices;

1)Convert to the 'religion of Peace', or

2) Fight!

Or, maybe 3) Live on their knees under constant attack.

The CIA World Factbook lists a population of 19,546,792 for Australia.

Len Notaras, the Royal Darwin Hospital medical superintendent, said: "We're looking at full-body burns, which are quite horrendous. In a sense it has been our own September 11; it's a tragedy."

This is not a direct comparison to 9/11, and if you had actually read the article before shooting off your mouth to insult our allies, you would have known better.

my apologies, Australia's population is under 20,000,000. Still roughly equivalent.

I like the quotes on your homepage, though, rw.

If you are a real man (or woman), you need to apologize for your senseless and pathological comment.

Acknowledged, my mistake. Still roughly equivalent, though, slightly higher proportionately for the Aussies.

Bingo. Your namesake, Alexander, would agree totally. Jefferson would be looking for ways to surrender.

I do apologize since I did not take into account proportion of population. It is basically their own Sept. 11 based on population. Before I thought of that I was looking at the numbers and the article's headline basically sounded like the Aussies were complaining that nobody is caring about their situation. That made me kind of mad. But looking at population, this did hit them hard....

Im sure alot of people sold their non-semi auto guns for the quick cash and a case of guilt after the incident that triggered the whole debacle,as any gun was permitted in the 'buyback'.

The main problem with the gun issue here is that you cant buy a gun on the basis of self defence....and that really is THE ISSUE.You have to get a licence on the grounds of hunting, rural protection etc. This only makes it hard for people in urban areas.....hard but not impossible.

This however,is little consolation for me when i look jealously at the websites of beretta etc and think of better days.

I agree with you. Australia is one of the more pro-American allies, much more so that many in NATO, esp Canada. Count Australia as one of our better allies. John Howard was the most pro-US ally after 9-11, Chretien one of the most weak. Australia will always back us up. They are the most loyal ally we have, Period.

Population-wise, I guess it was as bad as we went through really....which I did not realize when making the comment. I read the headline and a little bit of the story and came away feeling like the Aussies are tryign to compare their situation to what we went through, which upset me and resulted in my comment. I take it back now.
