Shocking Personal Story from a Student at Santa Monica High
Posted by the ChronWatch Founder, Jim Sparkman Tuesday, October 15, 2002
ChronWatch received this amazing letter from a student at Santa Monica High. The events happened last year and early this year. It speaks for itself:
To whom it may concern:
My name is Christopher Moritz and I am a senior at Santa Monica High School in California. For the last four years I have endured the stigma of being an outspoken conservative Republican in a sea of liberalism. This is my story.
As we are all well aware, the American educational system has been hijacked by the left who use impressionable young people as a modem for proselytizing their neo-Marxist ideology. This problem is of national concern and affects every region of the country. Typically we associate this radical takeover of education with the university level. However, as I have learned from experience, left wing bias is prevalent throughout the high schools as well. When I entered high school I was astonished to discover the extent to which my school leaned in a singular political direction. Nearly all of the staff were liberal Democrats as were the overwhelming majority of the student body, which is over 3500 people.
The direct correlation between the political beliefs of the students and the teachers cannot be overlooked. If a student is unsure of his political beliefs and all of his teachers purport the same message, than it is safe to assume that he will adopt a similar ideology. In affect, this destroys the educational process, which is intended to provide people with the knowledge they need to formulate their own ideas. I believe this is clearly indoctrination of the youth, a tactic used by both the Nazis and Islamic radicals.
In an attempt to promote the underdog of campus politics, I formed the Political Forum Club. Along with a small band of conservatives, we have dedicated ourselves to fighting the political status quo of our school. This has been an arduous process that has brought us great criticism and retaliation by students and teachers alike. Nevertheless, we endure to promote diversity, an issue typically of great concern to the bleeding heart of the leftist--except of course, diversity of thought.
One of the first steps I took was to invite Libertarian talk radio host and author of the New York Times bestseller The Ten Things You Can't Say in America, Larry Elder, to speak at an assembly held at our school. Mr. Elder, who is black, spoke about the fact that racism no longer prevents minorities from succeeding in America. Mr. Elder also emphasized his message of personal accountability and the importance of a limited government.
The response following the assembly was frightening. Keeping in mind this was a voluntary assembly and that no one was forced to attend, many teachers and students were in an uproar. They called Mr. Elder an Uncle Tom, accused my club of racism, and some even protested our right to congregate on campus. Although a barrage of left wing speakers, including Al Gore and a radical from the United Farm Workers Union, have appeared at our school, Mr. Elder was the first conservative/libertarian to do so.

I am a conservative libertarian. They can not only bethe same, when they are, nothing can come close to its rightness. You may be a libertarian-leaning conservative, or vice
versa. But the two philosophies are not the same.

As much as Joe McCarthy may have overstepped his boundaries, he was right. My father told me when I was quite young (mid to late 50's) that the communists wanted to take over our education system, starting with the educators. Well, what ever offshoot of Marxism you choose (communism, socialism, and now progressivism), that is exactly what has happened inspite of the defeat of the soviet union. It has taken over 50 years to do it, very gently, until we have what we have. And in another 100 years, this will be the Soviet Union of North America.

Actually, he writes well beyond grade level.
I also enjoyed the (unintended?) use of
children as modems. Hmm. "Hey kid, warble
into the phone while I dictate this!"

Can you beleive this? You're kidding, right?
Add me to the list of former of government school inmates that have opted to homeschool his children.

"The principle also made me agree to invite a leftwing speaker to ''balance'' Mr.Elder the following semester."Sounds like a fine idea!
Should be no problem finding a "leftwing" speaker who's such a whackjob that the fallacies of modern liberalism would be amply demonstrated to his audience.
Preferably someone like Ralph Nader who'll be laughed out of the place when he tries to convince all the little darlings at Santa Barbara High to give up their Bimmers and walk to school!

How terribly ironic for America. We watch communism and socialism self destruct with the demise of the old Soviet Union and yet many Americans are rushing to embrace that failed system. Are there enough clear thinking Americans left to fuel a successful revolution leading back to our roots? I doubt it.

Of course- Santa Monica ( People's Republic Of ) was the district of former state assemblyman Tom Hayden ( a Commie/ Lib/ Dummy-Democrat) and an ex-hubby of who other than Jane Fonda!
Tom Hayden was a founder of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS); A defendant in the infamous "Chicago Seven" trial and an avid protester during the Vietnam war.
(He twice visited Vietnam during the conflict. Wasn't Santa Monica the pioneer of "Rent Control" imposed upon property owners in the early 70's? See this link:

Also do a Google Search on Tom Hayden.
Good luck-Comrade!

Something doesn't pass the smell test here. The vocabulary and syntax of this piece just doesn't jibe with the author's use of 'principle' in place of the correct 'principal.' I agree! Maybe a ghostwriter?

That's just so you know he's still a student. He didn't want it to be too perfectly written.
Actually, I just plain missed it. ;)

He did misspell "principal" but I wouldn't make a mountain out of that mole hill.

However, as I have learned from experience, left wing bias is prevalent throughout the high schools as wellThis is an understatement and applies to middle and elementary schools as well. Have been de-programming my kids after school daily for years. It's unbelievable some of the trash the teachers spew.

I agree with everything that you said. I have a favorite saying that I use to respond to this type of article: The quality of public school education is inversely proportionate to the growth of the NEA.
I have been thinking of a way to raise the salaries of teachers in our state (WA state teachers salaries are near the bottom). I would suggest year around schools, no teacher unions, community control of curriculum. Teachers' salaries would increase dramaticly with the year around contracts, but the time off would be dramaticly lower. You could create a two tier system, the professional,non-union level who work year and the union teachers who work the traditional school year.

The vocabulary and syntax of this piece just doesn't jibe Oops ........ some self-correction is in order here:
... vocabulary and syntax just DON'T jibe .....
Sheesh

Can you beleive this?I once stood in a line at a small convenience store behind a fifth grade school teacher. She bragged to the clerk that she was indoctrinating her students in feminism.
The educational establishment is a sick and even evil place for children to be. The hypocricy of championing free speech for one's self while seeking to restrict the speech of others is breath taking.
To: TCSparkman
No surprise here. Santa Monica is to the Los Angeles basin area what Berekely is to the Bay area.
