Daniel Pipes has proved himself to be one of our most sensible and clearheaded public intellectuals. My ears prick up when he talks.

As for the intellectual ruination of the universities, I think the sole remaining cure might be what the great C. Northcote Parkinson prescribed for a failing business, not to revive the business but to prevent its sloth and pessimism from infecting any new firm: insure the buildings heavily and set them alight. As the professors flee the blaze, sniper squads in the surrounding woods can pick them off.

I know, I know: I should stop trying to be funny so early in the morning.
