NEWSFLASH: Another shooting, approx. 9 AM, this time near Fredericksburg
The Free Lance-Star ^ | now | Jim Lakely

Posted on 10/11/2002 6:54:58 AM PDT by seamus

I work in a newsroom in Fredericksburg, and they heard on the police scanner that a person has been shot at a gas station at "Four Mile Fork" which is a neighborhood just south of the City of Fredericksburg.

No details yet, but I wanted to let y'all know -- and keep up the tradition of FReepers getting news first.

Pray for the victim, and pray that this is a random shooting, and that this monster's terror has not widened yet again.

Not law enforcement, but the guard can do something if they are part of homeland security in defense of Americans. Someone is at war with Md and Virginia.

The Guard secured our ports after 9-11 and airports. Governor Bush called them out to do that.

Calling the Guard frees up law enforcement to investigate and pursue. How about swat teams? Seems like this is right up their alley as an arm of law enforcement.

He already was; that's why he got away today.

I wonder if he has a source on the inside that tipped him off.

Or maybe the shooter is an ex cop, and thus knows procedure, and can 'think like a cop'. I think there are at least 2 involved, so maybe one is an ex cop and the other has former military/soldier. Tactical and weapon experience?

It's very easy to change the barrel on many rifles such as the AR-15.

an AR can swap "uppers" in less then 5 seconds. Only the "lower" receiver is registerd. That is the aluminum housing for the trigger group. Everything else can be bought of the internet.

Gas stations do provide good access to targets and a quick escape

Additionally they are well lighted. His nighttime shots are at well lit areas so he can see his sights through the scope. It appears he is not using night vison(thankfully).

As a side note to this thread, it looks like Forrester has taken off the gloves. Last night on Britt Humes show he played a new campaign commercial. It starts with a teenager taking a test, obviously frustrated. He throws does his pencil and says "teacher, I'm going to fail this test, I quit. Can I have Frank Lautenberg take it for me?"

It then goes on with the same teen playing a game of basketball where again he quits the game and asks that Lautenberg play for him. It finishes by telling the people of NJ that the Lautenberg - Torriceli machine is telling kids it's ok to quit.

Let's hope this lesson takes with the electorate.

I can't figure out why this guy hasn't been seen by someone. Assuming he isn't shooting from a van/car, why hasn't anyone seen a someone carrying a rifle? Is there a sniper-style rifle out there that folds up quickly?

Investigators will video an area real quick and note every face in the crowd. If the same face comes up more than a few times other than a reporter or a responder, fire, EMT, LEO ect ect then they are suspect. Arson sorts used to like to stand around and roast a marshmellow per se and were always caught this way eventually.

IMHO I don't think such will apply here. Thermal hand held versions of a FLIR cameras and scopes can look at a grassy field and see a "warmer" spot if the person lay in wait for a long time. As it can autos that have or have not been running recently in a parking lot ect ect.

Lots of tech out there but I believe trhe LEO's will send a response to the site and an even bigger response will try containment of a "zone" to watch for the clues they have so far (white mini-van ect ). Techs have tools that will ID the position from which the shot was made within minutes.

I'd suggest that a lot of FLEA and LEO counter sniper types have been deployed around the city and every traffic/security camera in the area is whirring on overtime. I'd even suspect some DOD assets have been deployed in OP's under the guise of "homeland security/Terrorist " possibilities.

S/he will be caught if they have a partner as the only way for two people to keep a secret is if one of em is dead. If they are indeed in possession of the professional skills of a military sniper then they will never be caught IMHO.

Stay Safe !

Thanks! There is a local NBC station tower probably only about a mile from my office. Can't even get a decent tv signal from them, with a fancy booster antenna! I work late every night and I'd like to be able to at least catch some of the news, even if it's NBC.

A good directional antenna might help, more than an amplified antenna. What channel is the station on?

Yep, you're right on. With a couple of uppers, some polishing compound, and a handful of different bullet weights, they'd be pissing in the wind for a looonnnngggg time trying to "trace" it.
