I think it's silly to assume there is an "assault rifle" (whatever that is), involved here. The weapon might well be Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle. It fires .223, too. And, there are even pistols that use a .223 round.

Anything to make gunowners look bad!

Why haven't they narrowed down the weapon type yet?

Generally it can be determined by the number, direction and slant of the grooves.

BTW, I have a Ranch Rifle. Great gun, and stainless is a huge plus. Of course, no .223 makes a good 1-mile sniper rifle.

That's for sure. Besides the personal tragedies of of the innocent shooting victims, he's doing his best to shoot holes in the 2nd. Amendment. When he's caught, he should be turned over to the NRA or GOA for punishment.

How do the authorities know it was a .223 cartridge when all they have is the bullet and one cartridge case that may or may not have come from the murder weapon. Other cartridges also use the same bullet in the same weight; i.e. .222 Remington, .222 Remington Magnum, .22-250 Remington, .220 Swift, or maybe even .221 Fireball (not to mention a bunch of Weatherby and other stuff too numerous to mention). In addition, how can anyone assume it is an "assault rifle" in the form of an AR-15 etc. There was only one shell casing found which would lead one to belive that it may not be a semi-automatic assault rifle but rather a bolt action rifle that does not automatically eject it's fired cartridge cases. Such facts may not be important to the media but they will be important in the solving of this horrible crime.
