Report: Sea cow not endangered (Manatees)
Orlando Sentinel ^ | October 10, 2002 | Alicia A. Caldwell

Researchers from the Florida Marine Research Institute have recommended that the Florida manatee be downgraded from an endangered species to a threatened one, according to a preliminary report released Wednesday.

The change was recommended because the manatee did not meet the criteria for an endangered species as defined by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission in 1999, said commission research administrator Elsa Haubold.

"The species was not evaluated against the criteria in the first place and probably would not have met [it] ever," Haubold said.

Hi Nauti. How great, your own visiting manatees. That is wonderful. Do they recognize you? When you put out the lettuce do they come up to get it? Marvelous! Did anyone (historicaly like early settlers/Indians) ever try to eat one? Just wondering if they would taste a little fishy or would they (taste like chicken). heh heh ;9}

I doubt very many have.

Here is a site that shows which animals have been taken off the list completely. Here is another which shows which animals have been reclassified.

I never understood lots of the endangered species stuff.

If, as they claim, manatees were stupid enough to be almost completely wiped out by motor boats, then any true believer in evolution should have no problem with their extinction. The strong survive, the week are eliminated.

Same thing goes for cheetahs. They expend an obscene amount of energy to hunt, which then forces them to hunt more. Other cats have survived just fine in the same environment. Doesn't sound to me like they are equipped to survive.

Manatees are a pain in the butt. The govt. slows miles of waterway traffic for a few of these fat slow pains. Fort Pierce has spent millions of dollars on a manatee observation center that is on the outtake canal for its local ower plant. The manatees used to come up into this little canal in the winter because the water was several degrees warmer. Then they stopped using the powere plant and the manatees stopped coming. The govt still keeps spending millions on the center touting it as a tourist bonanza.
The manatee should be raised and harvested for manatee steaks and manatee burgers similar to what ted turner is doing with buffalo.
Anyone got any good manatee recepies?

Researchers from the Florida Marine Research Institute have recommended that the Florida manatee be downgraded from an endangered species to a threatened one. . .

One word popped out at me. Downgraded. I would think that an animal no longer threatened would be upgraded. After all, when a patient in a hospital goes from Critical to Serious, it is an upgrade is it not? What does this tell us? That in the eyes of environmentalists the only good animal (one that can be used as a political football) is an endangered animal.

As for manatee meat, if we could find a market out there for it I can guarantee that the beasts would no longer be endangered, threatened, or otherwise in short supply.

Bingo. The honest environmentalists should be celebrating this news.

Manatee meat

I've often wondered about that myself.

You think it tastes more like beef or pork?

thank you, I'm hard of hearing in one ear and might have had something like ADD -- it's always an epiphany when I actually learn the lyrics! Like that song from Bruce Springsteen/Manfred Man...."little early birdie....etc."

I think Florida alligators are pretty much off the list. Around here, dog food is just gator chow, once removed.

From post #15 :

One such cookbook, Gran Libro de la Cocina Colombiana, says the fleshy, flippered "sea cows" boast four types of meat -- alternately similar to pork, beef, fish and tortoise -- and recommends that all of them be deep fried.

Pork, beef, fish and tortoise--Thats a swimming smorgasboard. No wonder its endangered.

Yeah, that's a tough one! On purpose, too, I think!

I was big on Brain Salad Surgery when I was a teenager in the late 70s. My friends were into Frampton, Aerosmith, etc. at that time, and they didn't know what to make of ELP -- that was for the "college kids".

As for lyrics, there are so many sites for that particular brand of scatology on the web now, all I did was go to google.com, enter "karn evil 9 lyrics" and hit return. E-Z and fun.

I wonder how many species have actually been taken off the endagered list since its inception?

Twenty-three. Seven of these were due to extinction.
