A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....10-09-02

A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues;  salute
and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new
word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who
are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which
we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.  I
can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands
of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

ONE OF FR'S FINEST

Physicist
FReeper since 10-01-98

near Philadelphia PA

Physicist comes by his screen name logically and honestly. He has an Undergraduate Degree majoring in Physics and Earth and Space Sciences; a Masters in General Physics and a Ph.D. in Experimental High-energy Physics. His thesis experiment was performed with the AMY detector at the KEK laboratory in Japan, where he lived from 1988 to 1989. He is a Staff Scientist at the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Here is a link to his homepage at Penn.

Physicist was raised in Bethlehem PA of old Pennsylvania Dutch stock. His genealogical research has uncovered ten direct ancestors who served in the Revolutionary War in various Pennsylvania militias, primarily in Berks county. His Pennsylvania roots are deep; his family has been in Pennsylvania for almost 300 years.

"A FAMILY AFFAIR"

Physicist's wife is also a FReeper being registered as "Mrs. Physicist". Physicist has two siblings and both are registered on FR as "Enzymologist" and "Molecular Biologist", respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Physicist met in middle school, were married in 1991 and have three beautiful children. When Jake was born in 2001, Physicist shared the news with his FRiends by posting a poignant vanity thread. PHYSICIST AND MRS. PHYSICIST HAD A SON TODAY

"DON AND TERI ADAMS"

(Don Adams pictured above at FR Garden Party)

Physicist first started reading Free Republic just after the Lewinsky scandal broke, from a link on the Drudge Report. He lurked until October 1, 1998, when he made his first post regarding an appearance by Bill Clinton in Philadelphia the next day. Large crowds had been protesting against Clinton around the country, and he expected a similar occurrence in Philadelphia.

As it turned out, only around three dozen people were there to protest Clinton (including five FReepers), while around 500 members of the Teamsters and Carpenters unions were there to support him...and brutally to suppress anyone who dared to protest against him.

Physicist was the first person attacked that afternoon; he thinks he is the only FReeper ever to have his blood shed by the Clintonistas while protesting. Later that evening he witnessed firsthand the bloody beating of Don and Teri Adams, a brother and sister whom he met shortly after he was attacked.

The events of the "City Hall Putsch" in Philadelphia had a galvanizing effect on Free Republic. As a result of the incidents of that day, Jim Robinson made the fateful decision to go to Washington to demand the impeachment of Bill Clinton.

In a few weeks' time, 5000 FReepers decided to join him, and the result was the March for Justice on October 31, 1998. During that time, Physicist managed to establish contact with Don and Teri Adams, and he arranged for Don Adams to speak at the March for Justice that evening at the Octogon in Washington, D.C.

In the years since then, five different court cases have resulted from the beating. Physicist has participated directly in two of them, and has chronicled all of them in a series of posts to FRee Republic.

A good background source for the Teamster beating incident is the four-part write-up Physicist did for the 2-10-99 pre-trial hearing of Kevin McNulty and Marc Nardone. The links to "Philly Teamster Update" are here:
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

Please visit the following links for more information; still others are bookmarked on Physicist's Home Page: 9-12-00, 10-25-00, 11-01-00, 11-03-00, 12-18-00, 1-15-01, 1-28-02, 1-28-02

"FREE REPUBLIC PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER"

In December of 1998, Physicist became incensed when the City of Philadelphia began criminal proceedings against Don Adams, the victim. (Although he was ultimately acquitted, he remains the only person actually to stand trial as a result of the beating that was administered to him.) In response to this outrage, Physicist formed the Free Republic Philadelphia Chapter to organize local support for the Adamses, and to support Free Republic activism in the Phildelphia area. Abner is the current president of FRee Republic Philadelphia Chapter.

The FR Philadelphia Chapter staged protests against Clinton in the Philadelphia area more than ten times from 1998 to 2000, among other activities. Here are links to some of them, others are bookmarked on Physicist's Home Page:

"IN HIS OWN WORDS"

"I spend much of my time on FreeRepublic defending libertarian principles, defending evolution and fielding physics questions. If anyone has any, ask away!"

"At home, I engage in the only hobby that is also clinically recognized as a mental illness: book collecting. I most avidly collect academic imprints of the '40's and '50's, especially Mentor, Pelican, Modern Library and Anchor, but many others besides."

"I like to read classics, lit-crit, history, science, science biography, politics, Sovietology, philosophy, science fiction, fantasy, techno-thrillers and mysteries."

A final ending quote from Physicist:

......."here's the main difference that FreeRepublic has made in my life: I can look myself in the face in the mirror.".....Physicist, Post #33 My Life Has Never Been the Same Since I Found www.freerepublic.com

CONGRATULATIONS PHYSICIST

     2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up.
     3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
     4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.
     5) If all else fails or simply if you want me to do this for you send me an FReepmail and I will gladly do it for you. ~Mixer

Good idea, Mixer. We need to know the truth about oil companies. Unfortunately, there are many Urban Legends floating around....So hard to know what to believe.....But still, some things are just interesting enough to make the effort to prove or disprove them...

"The Scarlett side of Daisyscarlett recommends it highly..."

I must say that we have not gotten to that, yet. We've been here 4 years and have done many "touristy" things that have taken us outside of the metro area, such as the quaint town of Helen, Anna Ruby Falls, Oconee National Park, Lake Lanier, Stone Mountain, etc.

Still lots more to see....never a dull moment!

Well crumb-bum and nutz. Yep, on Thursday evening we were at Janousek's Holcomb Bridge Road, near the 400, location and had the place all to ourselves. Mrs. Janousek regailed us with tales of all they went through to finally make it to America and get a chance to live their dream.

We arrived around 6pm and had to be run out around 10:30pm.

There's lotsa business failures in the area, judging by the vacancies in the shopping centers and by the lack of business at the restaurant; I hope they make it through this recession OK.

Next time, I'll make a point of freemailing you with our GA plans and see if we can get together. JL

What a beautiful graphic you have made for Physicist. He is a great patriot and I am sure his militiamen ancestors are looking down with pride at him.

In anticipation of your arrival today, ta dah, I saved a graphic to post for you. Alas you will not be surprised to learn that I appropriated it from the net and I am sorry she does not have a hat, but this is for you...

Be glad to give you a link to the Hall of Fame (the first 3 months threads - but that was only through 9-20) I've been keeping them updated for the next quarter's Hall of Fame, so will include those links, too.

One thing that physicist pointed out to me when he was perusing the Hall of Fame is that a couple of the links didn't work (I'm sorry - careless of me not to doublecheck them all) One was Luis Gonzales and one was JulieRNR21. I'll try to remember to link those separately, too.

We shop in that shopping plaza where Janousek's is (Marshall's, Home Depot) but I'm sorry to say we've never tried their restaurant. There are so MANY restaurants around...we never had variety like that in FL.

That particular area seems to have had its share of business failures. Drug Emporium went out over a year ago and remains empty. Over by Marshall's, a whole side of storefronts sits empty. Not far is the North Pointe Mall and all of their outlying shops and restaurants. I think the Mall may be pulling from that area.

Please let us know when you come by our neck of the woods again. .45MAN and I would love to meet you!

As often as I have visited relatives who live near Atlanta in the last several years, there are many places I have not seen. But we have been to Helen GA(Solvang CA is much more interesting, IMO) and Stone Mountain, which I absolutely adored.....Of course, I have the most fun shopping at Rich's lol...I was privileged to have been able to shop at their homestore in downtown Atlanta before it closed. Even got in on their closing sale...what fun that was...

A bit of GWTW trivia....Margaret Mitchell included Rich's in the novel and her depiction was accurate as Rich's was founded in 1860...

And I have been to Turner Field though I hate to admit it as I despise Ted Turner. But he did build a great ballpark...

Thanks for the spa update....Now tell us if you have seen any good movies lately...I am actually going to sneak out in a bit and go and see that new Dustin Hoffman-Susan Sarandon flick-I think it is ladies type movie so unless Barb gets to pick a movie now and then, you might miss it...(P.S. Don't tell Billie I am abdicating my hostessing duties early...lol....)
