Maryland Sniper Shootings Update Thread
CNN, Fox, Local Radio and Television | October 8, 2002 | CNN, Fox, Breaking News

Posted on 10/08/2002 3:36:37 AM PDT by Peach

It's 6:30 a.m. EST and we're waiting to go to the second press conference providing media and local updates on the Maryland sniper shootings. To date, the 13 year old boy has survived the evening and seems to be improving. Fox News mentioned that his aunt is a nurse. The police briefing at 6:15 a.m. mentioned Todd Beamer's Let's Roll comment and police are urging people to use caution, good judgment, but remain strong and try to continue with everyday life as much as possible.

Police had a search warrant last night (didn't say for who or where) related to the sniper shootings, but the search did not provide any information to LEO.

I wonder where the son of Moose that was caught with crack cocaine is now.

Probably in Potomac, MD with the chief and his Nicole Brown Simpson look alike-wife.

It is just very unpopular right now to mention it around here.

That's because Bubba-2 is the president, and people get upset when you question the motives of the "new Messiah". None of the Bush-Bots wants to talk about the "Office or Reich Security",but if it had been Bubba-1 proposing it,they would have been marching on DC with pitchforks and torches.

These shootings will lead to gun confiscation and hence save millions of lives. The area chosen is vital to legislation being passed as well. Every day people from the area go to work they will be asking their fellow government employees to hound lawmakers to "do something" about the problem.

Yup,just as sure as the sun coming up in the east. It has already started. Kommie Katie had that fat cretin Michael Moore on "The Toady Show" this morning, and he has a new movie out pushing gun control". We will be hearig about "deadly sniper rifles" within days, and it's just a matter of time before Congress passes and Bubba-2 signs more gun control laws.

The 5.56 NATO (.233) is the work horse of the American Military

What does NATO stand for? Does all ammo have NATO?

I have been near someone who shoots a contender. It takes several days to get my hearing back,

Hah! You should see what happens when you pull the trigger after dark on one that has the 45/70 barrell on it!

BTW,I used to own one with the .223 barrell, and it wasn't really all that loud.

Just a couple of comments about your maps - they don't show elevations and Maryland is somewhat hilly.

There's a knoll the highway rides on between Gate of Heaven (GOH) and the shopping center. I've not been there for a while so I'm not sure where Michael's is in the shopping center, but you could probably only see the roof from GOH.

On the second map, there are storefronts blocking the park from view. In fact, I never knew there was a park there.

I wouldn't try to read too much into those yahoo maps - especially if you're trying to get a line of sight.

No, I didn't, BUT I think its over certain evidence leaking out. Right off the bat this morning it was reported that the casing was found. During the conference when asked he declined to answer. A few moments later during a top of the hour update, they mentioned the casing again. Next conference I think he admits to the evidence.

I'm guessing it has to deal with certain info that wasn't meant to go public. And then of course Carl Cameron blabs on tv about taunting the sniper to make a move.... come on Carl, I thought you were smarter than that!

Reports have mentioned that yesterday's shot was from 340 yards - a distance requiring the long barrel of the AR-15 to pull off.

Thanks. I had heard all the shots were taken within 100-150 yards, but I agree with you that a rifle was probably used for shots out past 300 yards.

Didn't I just read some place that it may have been Moose's calling the sniper a "coward" over the weekend that caused him to shoot the boy yesterday?

Several of us have complained about that. And one guy on FNC (didn't catch his name), said the same thing. But it wasn't over coward. He kept taking about how safe the schools are, over and over and over.....

I am assuming it is the standard NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) round developed to avoid all members from having incompatible ammunition and rifles.

I don't understand the 233 and 223 which is either used interchangeably or an error. (see post #658)

As a general rule, "journalists" never do the smart thing. :o)

IMO, they were having too many conferences when there was no new information to be given out. Any time you put yourself in front of the journalists, you run the risk of one of them tripping you up, and getting you to reveal more than you want the public to know.

They should do as the assassin and KISS. Give short brief conferences on only the data they want out and leave. No questions. Tell them they'll be notified if anything breaks.

You wrote " Do you believe everything you hear on face value?"

Not sure what your point is-but, the fact remains, as I stated in my post-Chief Moose has been the only one who has been gracious enough to acknowledge the phone calls of the FBI Director and Attorney General. That is a fact. My post expressed no knowledge or opinion on the police career of Chief Moose, just observed that he seemed to be the only one, who is willing to mention that Republicans are interested in helping out.The rest of the regional politicos are using their press briefings to stroke their fellow Democrats and bring nothing to the table, as far as solving this crime spree.

Now some conjecture. The sniper saw the police when he drove to the Michaels, got really mad and drove off in a rage to seek another target. The school was a last minute choice, a target of opportunity, so to speak. The sniper changed his MO at the school. He got out of the car and shot from the ground. He left a shell casing behind.

Very possible.

Anyone seen the playstation game NAVY:socom SEALS?

Just heard on Donahue that they are not even releasing the race of the 13 year old shot, anyone seen that mentioned?
Only thing I've heard is that the aunt is a nursing supervisor of some sort...

Right. And don't count on journalist to do the responsible thing. They coudn't care less about putting people in danger because of their babble. They probably don't even think about it. Very sad...

Don't take that at face value. Moose will be the last one to graciously accept Federal Control if this thing continues the way it is going. He is incapable of running this. He may be told that he can remain "officially' in charge, but you can't have a guy like Moose running a multistate manhunt.

He can continue to announce the time of the next press conference and turn it over to someone who knows how to run a press conference. That is really all he is doing now.

The school was a last minute choice, a target of opportunity, so to speak.

Because of the victim's age, I tend to think that the shooters have some connection to that school(former students, maybe). There were many adults they could have used as targets, but they chose a 13 year old.

Unless they are ME terrorists of course, it seems to me that because all their previous victims were adults (which rules out someone intent on killing kids only), it's hard to imagine an adult killer shooting a kid. But if the killers are very young (late teens or very young adults), it makes more sense: they wouldn't see a teen as a "kid" but as a peer. Makes sense?

I wondered if it had anything to do with NATO. But if its merely a universal ammo, then it couldn't be taken as 'degrading' NATO, just because its used.
