Maryland Sniper Shootings Update Thread
CNN, Fox, Local Radio and Television | October 8, 2002 | CNN, Fox, Breaking News

Posted on 10/08/2002 3:36:37 AM PDT by Peach

It's 6:30 a.m. EST and we're waiting to go to the second press conference providing media and local updates on the Maryland sniper shootings. To date, the 13 year old boy has survived the evening and seems to be improving. Fox News mentioned that his aunt is a nurse. The police briefing at 6:15 a.m. mentioned Todd Beamer's Let's Roll comment and police are urging people to use caution, good judgment, but remain strong and try to continue with everyday life as much as possible.

Police had a search warrant last night (didn't say for who or where) related to the sniper shootings, but the search did not provide any information to LEO.

Evidently they searched some residence located about 2 miles from Tasker school. Took away 7 weapons, a book, and a computer.

Any guess on the book?

Moose struck me as the most incompetent police chief or PR official I have EVER seen in a press conference

Did you miss the whole Chandra Levy thing?

I kinda like the moose ... I don't envy him his task. The main thing I question is all the press conferences, but it seems to be standard procedure these days for LE and politicians to maximize TV face time.

Moose got his Ph.D. in 1999. His Doctoral Thesis was analyzing the success of the Iris Project (that is the program that intervenes and substitutes for parents).

The Prince George press conference was much better. Even moose has very competent spokespeople (the female captain, for one)

When someone else talks we get information, when Moose talks, we get we feel your pain, do you feel mine?

It is about as good as listening to a psychological weather forecast. The people of the county are feeling very anxious, but we are making progress and will remain diligent.

In the mean time, Amazon.com uses their 1st Amend as a cover for their right to sell PRO-pedophilia literature...and those who buy the books, do not have to apply for permits, submit fingerprints and carry a piece of paper that connects them to the list of "future child rapers of America",.

This has never made sense to me. The protection of pictures of what I thought was illegal.

Chief stated they are still looking for a Box type truck. Just had a breifing.

If they are still focusing on this white box truck then that leads me to believe that there is some credibility to the early reports of a box truck with two hispanic looking (translation - possibly middle eastern) men. It also gives credibility to WND's story on the BOLO that went out for same.

No offense. Just keep readin, these points have been covered too

No offense taken. Just can't keep up with the posts today. A good friend and former co-worker, when I worked in CT, passed away at age 43 today. Trying to stay distracted with my usual distraction - FR - but my mind stopped working well about an hour ago.

In no way, shape or form does this resemble terrorist attacks.

We surprised the terrorists last year by shutting down the skies to all air travel, thereby squelching all their well-laid plans. I believe the anthrax attacks were probably terrorist, and although a few people did die, our postal service managed to get a handle on that situation. The US has the capability to respond quickly to these mass-type attacks. Therefore, maybe they've had to change strategy and turn to a more personal attack MO. I agree that on the surface this does not appear to bear the terrorist imprint. However, given their lack of success in previous endeavors, I do not think we should rule this out as a terrorist plot in a change of tactics. I'm not convinced it is terrorist-related, but I'm certainly not convinced it's not!

Thanks for the info - I hadn't heard that (about the specifics of the search). Are they sounding hopeful the search was fruitful in regard to the shooter? And yeah - the book was probably the Koran.

Phone book? :) This is getting serious, if this guy isn't him, they have started searches of people that have no ties to the crime what so ever. I'm sure many won't get their guns back or will have to fight tooth and nail to do so. f this isn't him, it's the beginning of a large shakedown. :(

What would the downside be?

Parts interchange. It would be easy for a smart criminal to throw suspicion on someone else using this "evidence".

Besides... five minutes with a whetstone or Dremel tool and all the effort to "fingerprint" each firearm is for naught. It'd be easier than filing off the serial number.

Any guess on the book?

If we're to listen to the so-called expert profilers, it's probably a guns & ammo magazine. If we listen to a lot of the common sense analysis here, it's probably the Koran

Was WND the only source for the two Hispanic looking men?

As far as I know it is the only source. Their source must have been someone privy to these types of bulletins.

BTW,why is everybody still claiming he is shooting a rifle? Why not a .223 handgun, like a Thompson Contender or a Remington?

I believe it is a rifle, something like an AR-15. The Thompson Contender (with long pistol length barrel) is generally accurate to 200-250 yards. Reports have mentioned that yesterday's shot was from 340 yards - a distance requiring the long barrel of the AR-15 to pull off. The shooter is obviously using a scope, and if the rifle is sighted in at 300-350 yards, the shots aren't really all that difficult. I would be searching for clues that distance from each victim's position.

When wackos start a spree like this, they are usually incapable of restraining themselves after they get a taste for murder.

Not necessasrily. We had a series of local shootings here in SE PA a few years back. After a few of them, the shooter waited many, many months before returning to his crime. He used a handgun and had to get closer than this man, so eventually someone saw enough to enable the police to find him.

I might point out that the questions provide more information than listening to Moose.<<<<< I noticed that earlier, but that it might have been an 'isolated incident'. Thanks for the heads up on CNN though for hearing the questions better.

Are you saying that you heard the question I missed (but heard very clearly, I just wasn't paying attention, grin)

Occam's razor says this is terrorism.

Hmmm. I think the fabled razor points to a domestic nutjob....

13 year old boy's aunt who probably saved his life yesterday is a nurse in the pediatric wing of the hospital where the boy is a patient.
