Maryland Sniper Shootings Update Thread
CNN, Fox, Local Radio and Television | October 8, 2002 | CNN, Fox, Breaking News

Posted on 10/08/2002 3:36:37 AM PDT by Peach

It's 6:30 a.m. EST and we're waiting to go to the second press conference providing media and local updates on the Maryland sniper shootings. To date, the 13 year old boy has survived the evening and seems to be improving. Fox News mentioned that his aunt is a nurse. The police briefing at 6:15 a.m. mentioned Todd Beamer's Let's Roll comment and police are urging people to use caution, good judgment, but remain strong and try to continue with everyday life as much as possible.

Police had a search warrant last night (didn't say for who or where) related to the sniper shootings, but the search did not provide any information to LEO.

Montgomery Co. press conference: ballistics test inconclusive for Hillandale shooting; they're not ruling out its being linked.

Yes. The cars were stopped at the light trying for a left turn and the killer stood in the median with an AK. The reason I remember it is because one guy was driving his wife to work with him. They both worked there. When he was killed and she wasn't hurt, she joined the anti-gun crowd and blamed the AK.
What a dimwit.

5:30 is also a common time for dinner. Not as many witnesses?

The 5.56 NATO (.233) is the work horse of the American Military

Cake_crumb's reference is not the exact reference that I was referring to, but as I remember the Portland cell was found with 5.56 and 7.++ rounds and 1 piece of 223 brass.

It bothered me because you have been saying 5.56 is known as 224 in civilian terms, not 223 and the above quote introduces .233???????

Well, with the vehicle stationary, it sure does up the percentage of a hit thats for sure. I thought you meant it was moving also.

Being asked about the Hillandale round again...
Mike Bouchard says that the analysis is inconclusive.."Alot of other factors we can not discuss"
Review of the Hillandale incident...again, as store was closing, victim survived attack..

Did you ever hear what Moose was so upset about? I'm sure he's trying very hard and all LEO feel guilty when they can't find perps - and it's all so public. I did hear him say that he feels diminished because he can't find the guy(s).

What is it with this term "coward"?

In the case of the sniper, I think its because the shooter stays hidden, a good distance away from the victim. The victim doesn't get to see their assassin, and the assassin is shooting unarmed people.

COWARD POS.

"and basically walked right up to his victims and shot them."

Is this the same incident as where the perp boxed in his victim by shooting the driver of the vehicle in front, those to the side of him and them walked up to shoot the intended target?

The one where the perp then caught a plane to the Middle East within one hour of the shooting? That was a hit.

Check the graphic at 729. I wonder how much of that is being set up in MD now?

I wonder if this is a test of our counter sniper capability?

I wonder if a message is being delivered to our leaders (who spend so much time around DC) that "if you step outside, it could be you next."

If he's a disaffected white nutcase, yes, he'll start the manifestoes and communiques and whatevers. In fact, they should have begun by now. If he's a Muslim terrorist, he won't. Al Qaeda never takes "credit."

Remember, if we hadn't gotten live and undeniable reports from the planes, we'd probably still be blaming bizarre autopilot errors for the WTC attacks...

Muslim snipers have also operated in Israel, but they don't need to take credit: everybody knows who dun it (although often individual Muslim organizations will rush forward to claim the "glory").

That would be consistent with the Great Satan's theory about the anthrax.

But all the profilers that have been on T.V. say that if this is terrorism they would have taken credit by now. (SARCASM)

My guess is that it's a ploy to draw him/them out. The worst thing now would be if they disappear from the radar screen and go into hiding with megabucks of increased local/fed activity.

Carl Cameron reported that they were trying to draw the shooter out.

I wondered how smart that was to actually televise that statement?

I would expect a few of them are being deployed to the area. As to our political people being exposed the Sgt at arms of the House has notified members to stay inside because of the sniper - per Fox News. I presume the same is being said to Senators. This sounds cold but perhaps this whole ting is being done to cover the shooting of some politico who lives in the area said shooting to be at a future date.

I am presuming that the Secret Service and the Capitol PD have considered this and are taking appropriate action. They might be crooked scumbags but they are our crooked scumbags.

I am not a big believer in the Michaels theory but there are three Michaels stores right off 66 going West. They are in Fairfax, Centreville and Manassas. I checked MapQuest and all of them have a park within 900 feet.

Not good. Should perhaps have LE in each park, just in case. (course, we don't know, they might be doing that, by now)

The military round or cartridge is a 5.56 MM. It has a heavy full metal jacket and can weigh either 55 or 62 grains. The bullet will have a groove or cannelure around the circumferance so the bullet won't jump in the case during semi or automatic fire.
The civilian round or cartridge is a .223 Remington. It has a multitude of different bullets from hollow points, soft points, match bullets, boat tail, and a variety of bullet weights. from 40 grains to 80 grains.

The actual bullet diameter if you measured it is .224 and that's the bullet you would buy if you planned on reloading your own cartridges.

I use Remington-Peters cases, Hodgden 335 gunpowder, Sierra MatchKing .224 69 grain bullets with Winchester small rifle primers.

This is the short version off the top of my head. I'm sure that someone will tell me that the military also uses tracers and proof rounds but this was the simple version. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Didn't I just read some place that it may have been Moose's calling the sniper a "coward" over the weekend that caused him to shoot the boy yesterday?

As a general rule, "journalists" never do the smart thing. :o)
