Maryland Sniper Shootings Update Thread

It's 6:30 a.m. EST and we're waiting to go to the second press conference providing media and local updates on the Maryland sniper shootings. To date, the 13 year old boy has survived the evening and seems to be improving. Fox News mentioned that his aunt is a nurse. The police briefing at 6:15 a.m. mentioned Todd Beamer's Let's Roll comment and police are urging people to use caution, good judgment, but remain strong and try to continue with everyday life as much as possible.

Police had a search warrant last night (didn't say for who or where) related to the sniper shootings, but the search did not provide any information to LEO.

If I remember correctly the guy in Austin had a large brain tumor. This guy is different than the typical nut in that he is disciplined enough to stick to the one shot per location MO, regardless of the number of targets. I think it's 50/50 he's a terrorist or just someone wanting to feel the power of life and death. His targets are those of opportunity. The area is right, the escape route is good, there is a target, take the shot an dissapear. This MO makes me think that he is not hearing voices in his head. If he has an associate the terrorist probability goes up to 70 percent. This is completely different than any prior spree or serial killer situation, and it is causing terror.

I think the Patriot Act pretty much wiped that out. I believe LE can now search and seize without a warrent. If anyone knows otherwise, please post.

(sigh), Please have at least a passing knowledge of facts before you post. The Patriot act lowers the bar for getting a warrant, but, for ANY search and/or seizure, a warrant is required. Therre are a few nit points but by and large it is not Carte Blanche. Please go to the DoJ website and download "Searching and Seizing Computers and obtaining evidence in Criminal Investigatins". This is the document that gives the procedures for ANY property siezures under the Patriot act.

Of course not! But the driver has to stay at the wheel to escape right after his partner's shooting is done.

And BTW, I do think there are really sick games out there just as there are really sick movies that nobody "normal" would find any pleasure or thrill playing/watching... Just MHO...

Saying that a military trained sniper is doing this is a fair assumption. I think implying it is an American is far fetched. People either go off like McVeigh (clear political motive) or they pull a Texas AM Tower (Brain Damage). One is methodical, the other is just base emotion. This one is methodical, and is against clearly innocent, non-political elements of society. This is terrorism, insisting it is a former or current member of the US military is tin foil hat time. Not impossible, but considering we are at war with a violent religion that encourages this MO, it is improbable.

Thanks for posting that link. This is the type of researching I've been doing the past couple of days. What is described on tapes and in the Jihad training manuals is enough, in my opinion, to at least qualify terrorists as a possibilty somewhere near the top of the profilers' lists.

I have a sister-in-law who is(was) a Vegan. She works making magazines for kids which promotes values such as not eating cute cows, gun banning, gender variations, etc... She spends a lot of time in Brussels at EU conferences. Well after a many years she decided her ovaries were getting old and she finally contributed to global crowding with a fine baby boy. Labor day weekend she came home with a new Ford Expedition SUV, and she now eats anything that is in front of her especially meat! Her husband was driving her new SUV and a deer ran out and caused about $7,000 of damage to her new SUV. She is attending this months town meeting and intends on demanding that the deer in the area be shot in special hunts. She plans on quitting her job and staying at home now. Thirty years of nutty liberal loony training all cured in six weeks of motherhood! There is hope for the left yet.

I agreed with your comment re the racial commentary on this and other threads, and have also commented on other threads it's nearly impossible for LEO's to protect us from this kind of crime.

Thank you for the link, Lisa. I think there is a good possibility that it is terrorism, but I also could imagine a home-grown, methodical nut.

However, I remain puzzled at why, when I consider terrorism, I am labeled as hysterical and illogical.

Well, I think you'd be surprised how easy it would be to take a shot, lay your rifle down, and drive away. All in all, I think it would take 15-30 seconds more if the driver was shooting.

And your view on movies and games is fine by me. But I still think it is dangerous to try to find fault in something that has nothing to do with this. Arabs don't have many Playstations around, and they still seem to know how to kill pretty well. Again, you absolutely have the right to your view, I just believe it is relatively dangerous. Just my .02.

Good idea, Kim, especially in light of the fact that a few of us thought we heard on tv last week that police were looking for two Hispanic looking (read possibly middle Eastern) men. That's already law in Maryland..... for HANDGUNS. Poor Maryland gun-grabbers.... didn't work as well as they hoped it would, now did it? (No shells on record for rifles)
