I keep pondering the "invisible sniper" and have developed a pistol mindset

What is the max muzzle velocity from a pistol versus a rifle?

Now, bear in mind that kinetic energy = 1/2*mv2 (i.e., kinetic energy varies proportionately to the *square* of the velocity) meaning a LOT more energy is imparted to the bullet when a 223 round is fired from a rifle as opposed to a pistol ...

I think forensic tests/examinations are capable of estimating the KE and therefore the muzzle vel thereby judging the firing weapon's type (pistol/rifle) ...

A 55 grain bullet fired from a 24" barrel typically travels at 3300 FPS. Out of a Thompson Contender, with a 14" barrel you could push it 2800. Out of a 12" barrel I would expect 2600 FPS. The longer barrel would produce 772 foot pounds of energy at 200 yards, your pistol...only 453 FPE.

Ahhh... That's what I want to know...if they can determine "THE EXACT WEAPON" from their evidence.

Physics was so long ago, I can hardly remember except we had a great time in the pub after class.

Thanks/Sac
