I would like to think we're smarter than to start hurting a bunch of innocents. There already was some nut case in Texas who shot a Hindu over 9/11.
We're better off doing what we can against regular street crime, and emptying water containers outside our houses to get rid of mosquitoes than doing something about what's going on in Maryland.

First of all, I think the victims and their survivors might not want to be identified, maybe out of fear.

Secondly, since all this started less than a week ago, we don't know whether the absence of shootings during the weekend have any significance at all.

Thirdly, I think your governor with the strange name needs to say a few words to the people, too.

You could be right about not wanting to be identified. But one victim funeral openly invited the press to the viewing, giving date and time. Still I've heard no name. At any rate, it's more a rhetorical question I guess.

The shame about the weekend thing, which I'm sure the LE has noted if stupid me noticed, is we have to sit and wait through God knows how many killings in the coming week to see if the pattern holds for next weekened.

The Governor's name is Glendenning, more properly Spendenning. He's a terrible person, worse than Clinton if you can imagine. I think the state's leader should making an appearance but hey, who knows, maybe they're scared that such a thing would further un-nerve people.

The truth as I see it is the LE and government have no idea how to play this thing and are doing it by ear. Witness that stupid police comment last week that the school children were safe. Obviously they were not and I've no idea why such a thing was said other than being a lie foisted upon us idiots to keep us calm.

One more musing since my last list....the number of victims in a given day seems to be decreasing. I think this is because the citizens are waaaaay more observant than they were last week. Whoever's doing this is very skilled I say, not at all some nut case. Guy had to be sitting on his hands the entire weekend. Can't imagine a nut case doing this. It's so "ordered" somehow. And for sure the guy knows how NOT to get caught.

Which seems to me that some sort of "training", I know what or where, was involved. There'd have been many more killings I argue but Maryland citizens are paying attention to everything unusual in their surround. And STILL the guy managed to get off one shot.

I just heard on the news that investigators are concentrating on a wooded area and a park across from the school. They said the young boy had just gotten out of his aunt's car and was not far from the school entrance when he was shot.

This aerial photo shows a wooded area along the lower portion. It looks as if the school has two locations that could be called an entrance. The one in the near lower left seems fairly close to those trees. The other one by the temporary buildings seems a long way off. I wonder what the distance is from the wooded area to those entrances...

Between this young boy being shot, the NJSC decision, and hearing the nets aren't planning to carry out the President's speech tonight, it's not exactly been a banner day, has it. (Don't blame you for skipping out around the 1,500's - the commentary on whether or not the aunt did the right thing got a little judgmental. Everyone knows what their own community response is like re ambulance care and you were responding to what your situation was.) Gonna go search Google, but don't really know the best way to hit it. Will scroll around.

I don't think so, but you could be right. I thought some Arab Muslims were here taking military or private fighting classes of some sort and the feds shipped them back. It's one of those stories that rings a bell but don't remember the details.

Did any of you just hear Carl Cameron's report on Fox news concerning the shootings. Sounds like at least Fox is finally making the leap to openly discussing this as possible Islamic terrorism.

Reporter on WMAL said a patch of grass in that wooded area was matted. The police thought the shooter had lain down there to get off his shot.

This was such a big story that unlike a regular visit to FR, nobody's pinged me anything except before this shooting. I still would like to know what's wrong with Maryland's Governor or Lt. Governor? You'd think they'd be out front to reassure their citizenry. Too busy campaigning, I guess.

The buzz on the local news is that the letter the Chief spoke of was a formality to bolster local jurisdictions with federal resources. He quoted the following sections of Title 28 USC:

Section 533. Investigative and other officials; appointment

      The Attorney General may appoint officials -
        (1) to detect and prosecute crimes against the United States;
        (2) to assist in the protection of the person of the President;
      and
        (3) to conduct such other investigations regarding official
      matters under the control of the Department of Justice and the
      Department of State as may be directed by the Attorney General.
    This section does not limit the authority of departments and
    agencies to investigate crimes against the United States when
    investigative jurisdiction has been assigned by law to such
    departments and agencies.

Section 540. Investigation of felonious killings of State or local law enforcement officers

      The Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation may
    investigate felonious killings of officials and employees of a
    State or political subdivision thereof while engaged in or on
    account of the performance of official duties relating to the
    prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of an offense
    against the criminal laws of a State or political subdivision, when
    such investigation is requested by the head of the agency employing
    the official or employee killed, and under such guidelines as the
    Attorney General or his designee may establish.

While it may be nothing more than a memorandum of understanding between the county and the feds, or basis for the formation of a joint task force; it could be the legal footing necessary to involve federal intelligence. Or in other words a quiet nod to terrorism.
