My suggestions: booby traps, machine guns, razor wire, rottweillers, 10,000 troops, and Marine Inspector in charge!

More shots. My goodness, you'd think that Bush would get a clue.

Only once did an agent return fire, agency spokesman Ryan Scudder said.

Sooner or later, sooner or later....

Mad Minute = deterrence.

Washington cannot be allowed to turn a blind eye to our borders. It will be a HUGE issue in 2004.

Sounds like they get some action down there. Makes me want to think about being a border patrolman. What is the GS promotion potential for that job?

Shouldn't be a pure law enforcement function anyway. They should be under DOD as a separate arm of the military, trained at military bases rather than the Federal law enforcement academy, and simply be given special law enforcement jurisdiction in the national border area.

Then, some of the border state national guard units should be converted from Army/Air National Guard units into Border Patrol National Guard units, and each company sized element, instead of meeting one weekend a month, would have duty rotated so that some folks from the company patrolled a certain stretch every day, getting relieved by someone else after their 24 hour or so shift.

This way the land would be guarded by locals with the greatest vested interest in protecting the area and also people who would be acclimatized and possess a native's understanding of the terrain.

It is time to begin using National Guard units to patrol troublesome portions of the border.

There are specific areas where Mexican soldiers are crossing for who-knows-what-purpose, specific areas where illegals are dying in the desert, and specific areas where criminals are crossing to commit crimes, and then escaping through the fence.

In each of these cases, the Border Patrol is insufficient to the task. They are outgunned by the soldiers, and the illegals are dying in areas too rugged to be patrolled by pickup trucks.

National Guard patrols can be ordered by the governor, without any big production. It can be explained to the press as a humanitarian effort, where it is.

In the case of the renegade Mexican soldiers, who have already killed one Border agent and have attacked others, this requires a different approach. There are Ranger and Special Forces National Guard units. These should be deployed in the trouble areas, on both sides of the border. The renegade soldiers come from specific units, led by specific officers, who have names. And addresses. They should be dealt with quietly, and no word of it should ever be spoken publicly.

"That has a demoralizing effect on the agents."

Give me a break...how can anyone "demoralize" half ass "good enough for government work" low life Federal unions members...I thought the criteria of hiring a border agent is to find a Federal Union member approved to carry a gun but too damn stupid to find a job anywhere else in the "Federal Gov'ts Circus of Union Memebers Cush Job" market...BAN all UNIONS in the FEDERAL Government NOW!

Let's get old fat ass Colleen Kelly's butt down on the border and have her EXPLAIN what the UNION thinks "ought to be done" in the name of the UNION she represents.

"Edward "Bud" Tuffly, the president of the agents union in Southern Arizona, said agents are wondering whether there will be a response to the shootings. "

Sure. Bush will cuddle up to Mexico and tell our agents to stop shooting back.

Nothing to see here. The GOP wants the 'latino vote', and sacrificing a few boder patrol agents is a small price to pay. Send in your donations and pipe down.
