I disagree. It's a lightweight cartridge and it doesn't need all that massive a receiver. (nothing like a Mauser action, for instance.) The notorious M-16 is not particularly heavy in the receiver department.

One pretty hot varminter load on a .223 with a 52 gr Sierra bullet is about 20 grains of IMR 4198. Compare that to the .308 Win pushing a 110 gr Hornady with 38 grains of the same powder (also a hot load). About 3,000 fps. I use the 165 gr BT match bullets in .308 mostly though, and powder's correspondingly less.

I'll acknowledge that it's a fast bullet, but lightweight. I don't care for it. . . would prefer .25'06 for varminting myself, but it does tend to eat barrels.

Of course, reloaders are the most opinionated people on earth . . . ;-)

Transcript from tonight's Connie Chung. Looks like we'll have to ban all these dangerous high caliber rifles:

KATHLEEN KOCH, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Connie, well, as you just reported, we have now perhaps two more shootings. And sources very close to this investigation here in Montgomery County, Maryland, now tell us that they believe that the killer or killers here or at least a copycat has struck again, this because of that shooting now in Fredericksburg, Virginia, that occurred late this afternoon.

A 43-year-old woman was going about her daily activities, loading packages into her van in front of a Michaels craft store in the Spotsylvania mall, when she was shot in the lower back. Now, police say that the bullet passed through her body. And the woman is now hospitalized, in stable condition. But unlike the cases here in Maryland, in this case, police have found some evidence right on the scene. They have found at least one shell casing. And sources close to the investigation tell us that it was likely this type of a bullet that was fired. This is a .223, a high-caliber bullet. And, Connie, it's the very same type of bullet that was used, police believe at least, in these Transcript from tonight's CNN Broadcast with Connie Chung:

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(voice over): Police say a high-powered assault or hunting rifle like these was used in the shooting spree, the bullets high caliber most likely a .223. Using them with such deadly precision, experts say, takes skill.

police said a 223 or its cousins(221 222) was used in the shootings in MD too........whats this talk of another shooting at a DC store today(not VA) ?

So it could have been a .227 hunting cartridge which would help a lot just to not have to hear "Assault Weapon!" a million times after this is over.

Oh that's great... is it illegal for me to talk to the redneck down the street and let him teach me how to fire a muzzle loader?

I think that we can rule out a Mini-14 in this crime because the shooters are reliably hitting what they're aiming at.

Please, don't think gun control is a "dead issue", that's exactly what the liberials want you to think. Let the dems take the either the senate or the house and watch what happens.

Not related yet, as far as I know.

By the way, the scene of the shooting in D.C. last night, besides being a little over a mile from where I live, is just a couple of blocks from the local community college, Montgomery Co. Community College.

Well, we all know that most muzzle loaders are around .50 caliber, which we also know is a "sniper rifle" caliber. So I guess the hypothetical redneck would clearly be either a lunatic or a terrorist. < /sarcasm >

D'oh! You got me on that one. I almost expected that her survival was a cover story earlier, but I didn't want to say it online.

I hope she lives, that's for sure.

I guess we can say 8 victims, if we include the 'miss' and the survivor-to-be.

It's nearly worse than last year's anthrax warning.

Whoever this is, has a brass pair. Going to sleep a couple times between shootings and resuming, in the same general area, and being deadly accurate.

This is not luck. This is skill. How many state and federal resources were in the area today? Bet there were tons of helicopters on patrol, special teams ready to roll, and this guy/team just keeps at it with ice in their veins. I do agree with the profile about somebody in their 20's or 30's. This isn't a teen ager. My first guess is a trained islamist, second guess is a whack job ex sniper.
