I'm intrigued by the song "I'd like to change the world" by Ten Years After. It starts like this:
Everywhere is
freaks and hairies
dykes and fairies
tell me, where is sanity?
Tax the rich
feed the poor
till there are no
rich no more ...

As for Buying a Stairway to Heavan, it makes people think about Heavan. It makes people wonder about some lady going to make a salvation purchase at a church as though it were a discount store. I stresses the importance of that purchase, and taunts those who throw money at it rather than their souls.

I was always amazed at that stanza of "Stairway to Heaven" that basically mentions looking to the "west" for satisfaction and/or salvation, given the circumstances of the times.

In 1971 when the song was released, the West basically meant the US and Western Europe, although by today's standards the "west" is basically the US alone.

I am talking in geo-politcal terms, not religious ones, although the lack of religion in the former USSR and "eastern" bloc countries I beleive is an important undercurrent of the song.

Many layers. I have a weakness for Led Zepplin, such as the Battle of Evermore. It sounds like something a demon would say, lamenting the relative world stability that was caused by the US.

Even though he's a lefty, the song is good.

"Pop Singer" - John Mellencamp

Never wanted to be no pop singer,
Never wanted to write no pop songs.
Never had no weird hair to get my songs over.
Never wanted to hang out after the show.
Pop singer (writing) of pop songs.
Never wanted to have my picture taken.
Now, who would want to look into these eyes?
Just want to make it real - good, bad or indifferent.
That's the way that I live and that's the way that I'll die

POP Music is fake.

Actually, there's a more explicit reference to escaping over the Berlin Wall in David Bowie's classic "We Can be heroes"

Sheesh this is becoming a review of Zep's "Album IV". It is interesting though that the "Battle of Evermore" is placed right before "Stairway to Heaven", I beleive.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I beleive that is the case, with the second side of Zep IV starting with "Misty Mountain Hop", "Four Sticks", "the Battle of Evermore", and "Stairway to Heaven" closing the second side out.

Man now I am going to have to dig up that old LP, and the worst part of this is that about 40% of the people who read this reply will be asking themselves, "What is an LP?".

I agree wholeheartedly. FOr example, one of the most frequent invokers of Jesus and religious imagery is Prince. "Let's Go Crazy"(satan is the elevator) and "I would die 4 U" are two religious songs on just one album.

On his Emancipation album, he makes several references to Christ, and one song seems to be nearly completely focused on faith(also the song happens to be nearly unknown by most and yet is among his very best)--The Love We Make.

"Desperate is the day that is tomorrow/for those who do not know the time has come/to whip the dogs that beg, steal or borrow/ from a table God set for His Son

Wicked is the witch that stands for nothing/all the while watch and sees you fall/deeper than the ditch that bred your suffering/or the one being dug right now, by the morgue

Happy is the way to meet your burdens/no matter how heavy or dark the day/Pity on those with no hope for tomorrow/it's never as bad it seems until we say

Precious is the baby with a mother/that tells him that his Savior is comin' soon/all that believe will cleanse and purify themselves/put down the needle, put down the spoon

Sacred is the prayer that asks for nothing/seeking to give thanks for every breath we take/blessed are we inside this prayer/ for in the new world, we will be there/the only love there is the love we make "

Seems like he forgot Bomb Iran (set to the tune of Barbara Ann) by Vince Vance and the Valiants in 1980. Of course, that was during the hostage crisis in Iran. The hostages were finally released during Reagan's inauguration when the Iranian terrorists feared that Reagan might vaporize them. Then, of course, the modern era finally began and we had a real president in the White House.

You mean John Cougar? ;)

I like the line from Robert Cray's "Nothing but a Woman"...

You can give me an hour alone in a bank.
Pay all my tickets, wipe the slate blank.
You can buy me a car, fill up the tank.
Tell me a boat full of lawyers just sank.

Always brings a smile to my face. :)

Of course, I will give DEVO a big bump. Their philosophy of the de-evolution of man is right on!
If you can ignore the sophomorish early years, DEVO came up with some very inspirational songs. Check out Beautiful World, WhipIt, Patterns, The Satisfied Mind, and Through Being Cool. My kids love it! 'Course, I have to monitor their listening and edit out the 'adult' stuff.
You knew I would show up for this, didn't you?

Best pro-life song ever: You Can't Be Too Strong, by Graham Parker.

Absolutely brutal lyrics, incredible vocal (but then, the guy always sang like his life depended on it.)

I prefer equal-opportunity satire ...

Tom Lehrer, "National Brotherhood Week"

Oh, the white folks hate the black folks
And the black folks hate the white folks
And to hate all but the right folks
   Is an old established rule

But during National Brotherhood Week
   National Brotherhood Week
Lena Horne and Sheriff Clark
   Are dancing cheek to cheek
It's fun to eulogize
   The people you despise
As long as you don't let 'em in your school!

Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks
And the rich folks hate the poor folks
All of my folks hate all of your folks
   It's American as apple pie!

But during National Brotherhood Week
   National Brotherhood Week
New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans,
   'Cause it's very chic
Step up and shake the hand
   Of someone you can't stand
You can tolerate him if you try!

Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics
And the Catholics hate the Protestants
And the Hindus hate the Moslems
   And ev'rybody hates the Jews!

But during National Brotherhood Week
   National Brotherhood Week
It's National Everyone-Smile-At-
   One-Another-hood Week
So be nice to people who
   Are inferior to you
It's only for a week, so have no fear...
Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!

AREN'T YOU HUNGRY (3:27)
from U.S.A. FOR M.O.D. (1987)

Sitting in my kitchen.
Stuffed from having ate.
What should I do now.
With what's left on my plate.
Maybe I should save it.
But naw I got the cash.
Think I'll take the easy way.
And throw it in the trash.

U.S.A. for Africa.
What a %$#& scam.
Charity begins at home.
What about our land.
America has it's own problems.
That's what should come first.
So %$#& those %$#& 's charity.
And let them die of thirst.

AREN'T YOU HUNGRY - AREN'T YOU HUNGRY.

U.S.A. for U.S.A.
That's what I'd like to see.
But sympathetic %$#& .
Send it all to their own countries.
They want the food to grow.
On what they call home land.
But don't you know.
You can't grow anything in sand.

AREN'T YOU HUNGRY - AREN'T YOU HUNGRY - AREN'T YOU HUNGRY.

I think of people starving.
But do you think I care.
Let them all die hungry.
So I can breathe their air.

Okay, you want something a bit more conservative? Here's a great anti-environmentalist classic, from when they hadn't even coined that word yet ...

Tom Lehrer, "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park"

Here is a song all about Springtime in general, and in particular about one of the many delightful pastimes that the coming of Spring affords us all ...

Spring is here, a-suh-puh-ring is here.
Life is skittles and life is beer.
I think the loveliest time of the year is the Spring.
I do, don't you? 'Course you do.
But there's one thing that makes Spring complete for me,
And makes every Sunday a treat for me ...

All ... the ... world seems in tune
   On a Spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park!
Every Sunday you'll see
   My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cy-an-hi-ide.
The sun's shining bright,
   Everything seems all right,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park!

We've gained notoriety,
   And caused much anxiety
In the Audubon Society
   With our games.
They call it impiety
   And lack of propriety,
And quite a variety
   Of unpleasant names.
But it's not against any religion
To want to dispose of ... a pigeon ...

So if Sunday you're free,
Why don't you come with me,
And we'll poison the pigeons in the park!
And maybe we'll do
   In a squirrel or two,
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We'll murder them all amid laughter and merriment,
Except for the few we take home to experiment!
My pulse will be quickenin'
   With each drop of strych-uh-nin'
We feed to a pigeon.
   It just takes a smidgin
To poison a pigeon in the park!
