The dock strike is a disgrace. How dare they try and pull this crap off during a time of war. All of them should be fired. Give the jobs to people who need them. I don't know all the issues involved in the "strike" but I'd love to see the dock owners (assuming there are some privately owned docks) making an ultimatum that strikers either return to work or be replaced. I'm sure that there would be a violent reaction, but that might serve to further expose the left's self-centered agenda.
Come to think of it, I wonder if the dock strike isn't part of a leftist agenda that is trying to hurt the economy to make the Republicans look bad. The dems sorely need a crisis to help themselves.

"...they discussed whose hand to cut off next and how crappy their coffee was lately."
Sounds like a union shop.

Come now, the dock strike is real.....a real lib/dem pre-election ploy. When it comes to behaving in a manner detrimental to the national interests and security, lib/dems are in the process of perfecting the drill.

It's not a strike. FOREIGN company employers have locked AMERICAN WORKERS out because they would like to give their jobs away to minimum wagers. I'm for the American workers.
To: My Favorite Headache
Why should American workers be fired when the foreign employers locked them out? Read about it.

That's not quite the story. The companies locked out the greedy unions. The unions had been engaging in a work slow down for several weeks at least and had fought all attempts to modernize the ports. To the extent any modernization has happened the unions also are demanding collective bargaining rights over new computer operator employees who would be considered management by the companies and exempt from the CBA.
Until unions stop supporting Democrats, and the AFL-CIA blowhard John Sweeney, I say screw them.

The union guys want to make sure the new technology/equipment is run by union workers. The Seattle Times had a eye-opening (and depressing) article on it. The West Coast ports are stuck on old technology. In Rotterdam it takes less than six guys running a crane to unload a ship. On West Coast ports it takes 18 to 25 people per crane.
Even when the Ports have automated things the unions screw it up. At computerized ticket dispensers (to tell truckers which container to pick up) - A UNION GUY TAKES THE TICKET OUT AND HANDS IT TO THE TRUCK DRIVER!
Other articles point out the SELFISHNESS of the unions. What about the truckdrivers out of work? Or the shopkeepers waiting for their goods, or the factories across America waiting for those "just in time" supplies, or the American People who will pay the price? (What about them? Screw em. I want mine.)
But I guess if I was one of the union guys I wouldn't want to anutomate things either - even if all I did was give the ticket to the truck driver. Minimum wage at the ports is $57,570 (before overtime).

The dock "lockout" is a deliberate strategy cooked up between the unions and the national democrats to kill the economy just before the election. This will dominate the news in a couple of weeks.
They better hope not. Most Americans despise labor unions, and the unions are clearly the culprit here, since many of these longshoremen make $80,000 a year.

Johnny Jihad could just be making stuff up to get a lighter prison sentence. I'll be interested in what he has to say, but I don't think he was in the loop with senior Al Qaeda members. This puke is in the loop? Yeah right. And I'm sure that Ike Eisenhower discussed the plan for the Normandy invasion with Gomer Pyle.

Oh I fully agree, I'm sure there's more coming, and on their time too.You don't just commit one grievous act when you plan 'jihad' against "unbelievers".There are thousands amongst us here in the USA,(anybody else seen those big USA maps of known cells?) which really disturbs me.What/Where will it be next? And where are all those damn Psychics who think they're so damn smart, huh?Every one of them should have to put up or shut up at this point in Americas History!

I still am in favor of American workers over foreign shipping companies. Should these guys lose their jobs just because a foreign company wants cheap labor and huge profits? Not in my book. I don't like globalization, sorry.
To: sinkspur
since many of these longshoremen make $80,000 a year Good for them. They work in a dangerous workplace. Do you think they should make less while the foreign shipping companies who dominate the docks make more? Do you think the foreign shipping companies will share their huge profits with America? I don't think so. They would hire slave labor if they could.

The dock strike is a disgrace. How dare they try and pull this crap off during a time of war. All of them should be fired. Give the jobs to people who need them. And our beloved Senate is holding up Homeland Security Legislation because the people have to be unionized? What if we were hit, and they were on strike again?
How would they put America first during an attack, when right now they're holding up 40% of an already hurting economy?
I can't help but think the Democrat crooks in Washington are getting them to do this. The Union bosses and Decocrats are crime buddies. That way, they can use the economy against Bush in 2004. Until the union attacked us, the economy was rebuilding itsef quite well. Slow, but steady.
To: sinkspur
Yes, but...
The particular jobs in question "clerks" who run the (out-of-date) computer-tracking systems are paying $100,000 to $120,000. (per radio news today).

That's not quite the story. The companies locked out the greedy unions. Well, that happened here once. The unions kept asking for more and more from the Ann Page Food Company (A&P Foods). The Company told them no. The union went on strike once more.
The company brought in some trucks, loaded them with the factory equipment, and left town. Nothing remains except a huge empty building the county can't sell. Been empty for years now.
Now the union members don't even have jobs. They got too greedy.

I still am in favor of American workers over foreign shipping companies. Should these guys lose their jobs just because a foreign company wants cheap labor and huge profits? You're paying for these bloated union thugs in increased costs for goods.
Lots of other folks are losing jobs when companies downsize due to technology improvements. Why should these goons be exempt?
Everybody wants huge profits and cheap labor. Who are you to tell an employer how much money he can make?

I recall old fairy tales that speek of a time when there were owners of a business, before the union thugs stole everything that didn't belong to them. The owner decided what he wanted to do with his business.
Today, the owner has to ask the unions if he can use the restroom.
