Sen. Robert Torricelli will retain his Senate Seat - Jay Severn 96.6 FM Talk
96.9 FM Talk Radio - Boston, MA 07:35 PM | 10-02-02 | Vannrox commentary on Jay Severn Statement

Posted on 10/03/2002 9:11:34 AM PDT by vannrox

On 96.9 FM Talk Radio - Boston, MA at 07:35 PM the radio host; Jay Severin was providing his "Insider Commentary" on the New Jersery Supreme Court Opinion. During his commentary he mades some amazing statements.

This opinion, as you may recall, stated that even though the law specifically stated otherwise, and that even though the law was written for exactly this kind of event, it was invalid. They ruled that the Democrat Party can place anyone they wished on the ballot, in deference to the rule of law. That they can do this independently of time or of reason.

The net effect is that Sen. Robert Torricelli, who was losing his reelection bid for the US Senate in New Jersey dropped out of the election. In his place, the DNC then appointed a "Better" candidate; former Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

From the information provided by Jay Severin on the radio, it appears that "Insiders" are well aware of this "Fix" and that it has been thought of months ago. Apparently, use to personal reasons (health?), the former Sen. Frank Lautenberg would most likely step down one or two months into his term of office.

It is apparently planned, that by law the Governor would then have to appoint a replacement Senator. It is supposed to be Sen. Robert Torricelli, and as shocked as many who heard this is expected to be, it is anticipated that the outrage would be short lived and forgoten. Because the Senator would have six years (minus two months) for the people to forget about this event. Further, it would be unlikely that any court would rule against a Governor appointment by law, no matter how blatently corrupt.

Sorry, I just don't buy this. It would be political suicide for McGreevy. (Unless he's outted by then)

This scenario makes no sense to me. Why would McG risk the backlash? Torricelli's only value to the Dems were his seat and his fundraising prowess. He was disliked by just about everybody. So if McG appoints someone, they've still got the seat. And Torch's embarassment has nullified his fundraising ability. So why put him back in there and further damage the party's reputation? They'll simply give the seat to an up and comer. Just my two cents.

I don't know. There doesn't seem to be a drop of moral outrage in all the liberals in all the world. They will lap it up and think their saviors are wonderful for getting around those "stupid"laws that republicans like so much.

I believe this is in error - as an appointment would only last until the next general election - they'd have to elect someone to fill the rest of the term in '04.

If an appointment took place, there would have to be a special election in 2004.

Nah. The Dems have dropped the Torch like a dirty diaper. And McGreevey would be committing political suicide.

I agree. My fear is that Bill Clinton would fill the seat (yes, apprently he's qualified), if indeed it is filled by anyone other than Lautenberg. And I personally have a hard time believing that Lautenberg would do this. He hates Torricelli and what would he gain? He's old and has no political future left. I wouldn't think he would want to leave a legacy of being a double-crosser. Besides, he was the dems last choice anyway.

This scenario would be a clear example of "tipping the board."

In this hypothetical case, the soap box and ballot box would have failed.

I do buy it. After all, who cares what happens to McSleazy once he's served his purpose. This is about far more than the state Dems...

And the only thing I really miss after having spent some time in the Boston area is 96.9. I loved to listen to Severin.

The question is: Are the citizens of NJ going to fall for this and vote for Lautemberg/Torecelli or are they going to reject this blatant cheating.

Totally legal....except for the bending of the 51-day requirement. The Torch will come back into the Senate...guaranteed!

Yea. I would agree with you - Provided that I believed that the Democrat Party cared how they looked in the eyes of the voting public. But from what I see, the kind of voters that vote Democrat now-a-days would applaud this kind of action.

They would do it as either

(A) Hey another victory for the little guys!,
(B) Boy, we really pulled the wool over the eyes of the Bad ol' Republicans now!,
(C) The Republicans couldn't of "stolen" this election!, and
(D) So what? We do whatever it takes. Whatever!

Now, apparently this is the kind of stuff that "insiders" of politics know all about. I don't know how valid that is. But I do know that Jay has been in Politics for over 20 years and has contacts all over the place. That is a fact. Also, he is also usually RIGHT ON with his predictions. That is also a FACT.

The average citizen won't stand for this. However, the union vote will be out heavily. I used to be involved with CWA, the state-employee union in NJ. They sponsered the Daschle visit last week and they have become excellent in getting their votes out (read between the lines). Pray for rain on November 5.

I don't want to buy this either, but Jay Severin is very accurate in his predictions. For instance, several years ago on WOR, before Bob Grant moved there, he predicted that hitlery would move(?) to a large state, run for senate, and use as a springboard to white house. Not many people believed him at the time.

its plausible except for the two month part and the Torricelli part. But I could believe that Lautenberg steps down after 18 months with a health problem and one of the other gnomes, say Menendez or Pallone gets the job.

What kind of a Idiot is this guy.

Toricelli would only be appointed for two years not six.
