Could be a scoped pistol.

Witness said on foot?
If the shooter is competent, he'd move around a corner (maybe 40 yeards) from the van, shoot on foot, then run short distance back to van. This would reduce odds of van being spotted, also reduce odds of his getting caught between hits compared to purely pedestrian affair.

"A well ventilated sillouette target taped inside a window looks awesome at night from outside with a soft backlight. You really have to see it.Nothing left to our sillouette targets when we finish with them...will have to stop short a few rounds and save one!

good catch on the map, mh !
this has happened in about a +/- 20 sq.mi. area;
plenty of room to migrate between shootings and not see the same person twice ...

For what it's worth. On one of the local TV News websites I saw a video clip of the scene around the victim with the lawnmower. There were 3 evidence markers on the sidewalk between 10 and 20 feet from the lawnmower. The suggestion from the reporter was that he believed they were shell casings.

In my novel, a leading character uses a scoped T/C Contender in .223.
She's a female on a motorcycle, and the LEOs are all looking for a guy with an AR-15 or Mini-14 rifle, so she slides right through.

LOL! Confetti!

I've heard tell of a "1 mile" range for all the shootings, but on the map it looks like 5 miles for the longest distance between two shootings, and total distance of maybe 15 miles traveled. Also, all are on major roads.
That said, it's curious that a guy in a van wouldn't move a bit more, to reduce his risk. But what kind of ninja moves could allow 6 shootings (remember the 1 miss) on foot, uncaught, and traveling 15 miles?

well, the reporter's 'suggestion' contradicts the cops,
who've said all the victims were killed with one shot each ...

That would strongly indicate short range encounters, which could be rifle pistol or shotgun, with the shooter in a vehicle.

A Contender in .223 would explain the evidence (except for casings, if any). But who would use a single-shot for this job?

i don't know about this job but I'm pretty sure that Nebraska bank robbery would have turned out differently if citizens had been carrying weapons and understood how to used them.
To: DWPittelli
Ahh we're all just guessin. Is mighty interesting to piece it together from afar though. I wonder why the LEOs haven't put out more info yet, at least on the weapon used?
To: Hatteras
If the police have shell casings then it would behoove them to tell us what type of gun (obviously, not exact model) is being used. It's hard to believe they would be so stupid as to not to. (The shooter knows what he's got, and knows the police know, if he's leaving casings.)

Can you imagine being innocent and driving a similar vehicle as the one that has an APB put out on it and also being black?? I probably wouldn't be looking too swift either!Paging Earl Scheib, Earl Schieb, $99.95 any color courtesy phone...

Hey, there's always the chance that it's a couple of nutcase 20 year-olds who aren't such good shots. The victims might have been killed with one shot but they don't say how many were fired.
In one of the reports on the lady victim at the Shell station, the mechanics said they heard two shots.

if the security tape showed that, it would also give more information about the SUV. Or the people/person in it!
